A very important discussion was held during my company meeting and was wondering how many other volunteer fire departments have this issue. In the event that a members gets significantly injured during a call does the department have a supplement insurance to assist the members with his/her bills. We all know that workmans compensation pays next to nothing and with this economy a person could liose there house if they were the only provider in the household. I have supplemental insurance to cover me but I pay for that out of my pocket. Does your volunteer department cover its members with supplemental insurance ?
Overseas, we actually pay for everything as a volunteer department. We pay for the truck, maintenance, fuel, equipment. We are not considered employees at any time, just volunteers. When the paid firefighters arrive, we are their support. But they usually arrive late so we are it. We are not covered by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) insurance. We do have insurance through the association that the brigade is through. For example, Federation of Fil-Chinese Firefighters has an ok insurance for members and they have tie ups with a hospital so if inured it would cost less than normal costs. Plus, as a department, we would all collect money to help with the costs. That puts a reality to brotherhood.
Our system is not ideal but Fire/EMS is still in its infancy and we are working on improvement.
We had a firefigher supplemental insurance that was paid by the chief. He had a $200 monthly discrecenary fund and started to use it to pay for our insurance. Sadly the new chief stopped it. Of course he's a paid FF and is covered by his department. I guess whats good for the goose isn't good for the gander.
I am the president of our board of directors and as far as I know the only coverage we have is workers com. of course we are in a rural area and we really dont have the funding for additional insurance.
Our department is a combination department (we have full time and Volunteer stations )our volunteers are covered under WSIB and the WSIB compensation is based on the compensation that would be paid to a First class full time firefighter so our plan is not bad as long as you’re not one someone that makes more than what a full time firefighter would make in your full time job outside fire. There is never enough coverage to compensate you when you get hurt in the line of duty but it pays the bills and covers and medical bills and rehabilitation costs. I blew my knee out at a call and they took pretty good care of me up until a point but unfortunately I will always have issues with my knee and any compensation stopped a long time ago
