How Would You Have Attacked This Fire?
This is a fire in Detriot MI. My buddy had found it and posted it on facebook. It was right around the time Captcity had posted his would you go into this forum. So I figured Id attach it and see what other stradegies people would have used at this fire or if they would have attacked it the same way.

Some thing people do not reolize in places like detroit were you go from fire to fire to fire....you do not always have a chance to fill your scba back up so you only use it when you actualy need it.

I have to ask how many of you would climb up on a roof without sounding it first? Otherwise I say I would do it pretty much the same way. Except having my SCBA and nomex on.

I'm a little surprised at this approach. I would have gone in the main floor and pushed it out the windows. In a perfect world, I'd try to use the wind at my back, but most likely we'd end up storming in the front door and horizontally venting as we moved forward.
That said, if this was an abandoned building, I may not be so aggro. No sense in falling through a rotten floor to save an abandoned place that was already falling over.
Still and all, great stop. DFD has some serious guts!

Guessing that this is a standard 1.5 story in fair to good condition, a highly unused tactic seems to be the 2.5" attack line. Now I know when ever there is a fire "The fire dept did an extremely aggressive attack." When doesn't the fire dept do and aggressive attack? I know i do. It seems everyone shy's away from the 2.5 or 3" lines. My attack would be a 2.5" through the front door and shoot strait up the stairway. Or put the Truck in service and put the stick up to the window and knock it down that way. Putting 3 guys on the porch roof isn't even a consideration.

You may want to reconsider bringing a 2.5" on an interior attack, especially in something small like a house. Yes, it's a helluva lot of water, but it's really hard to move once you get it inside. Here's a LODD where one of the contributing factors was the crew could not manoeuvre the hose once they got through the front door:

Besides, you can put out a lot of fire with an 1 1/2". Check out this attack:

Have to agree with you here Vic. If you have a good trained nozzle man 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 depending on department use is big enough for large amounts of fire.
Some people think that the bigger the hose the more water you can put on fire. But then your tiring your guys out quicker unless you have 3-4 guys on a line and I know many departments do not have that capability. Plus that means if your the only engine on scene for sometime and you dont have a water supply of your own your gunna burn through your tank water alot quicker. Thats one thing no engine crew wants to happen.
Also Jason sometimes in Detriot additional apparatus (sometimes a ladder) may not be available do to high call and fire volumes at the time and you have to be able to adjust accordingly.

I would have crews make a few openings at the door an check for extension and have crews attack it the way they did on the front roof, as well as have crews attack from below if possible. I would Not have crews enter off of the roof into the structure.

agree 100% and near the end, was that guy wearing ORANGE FIREBALL gloves? i havent seen those since i was a proby in 197-Aw forget it...yes, attack from the inside unburned side and HELL yes allways on air

no disrespect to jack but having fought lots of fire in those types of structures when i lived in NY i can say, you and i know lots of guys and gals that have been killed on "bred and butter" fires. the problem with a post like this one is you can only comment on what you see. there are so many variables and i never try to "well what if" a fire that i was not at
