I am wondering how does everyone keep themselves strong and resilient against all the stressors and traumas that you encounter in the course of doing your emergency service jobs?

How do you stay emotionally present and nurturing while keeping yourself sane?

What skills have you developed to make yourself more flexible internally?

I am also wondering what skills you utilize to help keep those around you strong and resilient?

booze. Lots and lots of booze. Alcohol stops the hurting.
till the next day.........lol
Exactly John a sense of humor and with me a wee bit of insanity....at least thats what my company tells me LOL
I talk to my little bulldog. She will listen to everything I have to say and not share it with others.
For me, it is my religion. Islam affords me the understanding and insight that I need to make it through each shift.
alcohol stops the hurting... until it makes you an alcoholic...
yes, I agree your faith and religion whether it be Islam, Christianity, Hinduism or any other kind of faith can have a stabilizing effect on your life and help you through difficult times.
One thing that was told to me after my first fatal accident was (Asst. Chief) " REMEMBER, YOU DIDN'T CREATE THE SITUATION, YOU ARE HERE TO HELP THE SITUATION. YOU DID WHAT YOU NEED TO DO". I have lived by that and have passed it on to new members. Support from leadership is key! Do the best care possible... One other thing I have going for me is my wife, who is also on the F.D. and we talk about the calls, good and bad.
The emergency is not my fault. But I'm there to help. In any way I can. Somebody has to do it. Sometimes I can only help take care of the dead for the family. Sometimes I can save a life. Sometimes I can save your house, but sometimes I can't. Sometimes your best just won't be enough. But, it's alright, because I did my best.
It's extra tough when the tragedy is someone you know.
Human beings are social animals. We work things out by talking through them. I'm there for my brothers and sisters to talk when they are having trouble working through stress. We are a team, and we're all in it together.
I think so far the worst for me was a guy ate a bullet as we pulled up.

Do you have nightmares?
no alcohol just delays the hurting.
As everyone else has already said a sense of humor but for me I have always tried to give 100% and that has always given me some comfort to think that I did everything I could Well and I guess my insanity could be some small part of it?!?!?
