Crash Test Dummy - Seat Belts Do Save Lives!
Ok so in all of my teaching, especially with the CTBS; 16 Life Safety Initiatives, I have preached to wear your seat belt; strap in stay in, and such. I will be honest with everyone, in my pre-firefighter career (many moons ago) I never wore my seat belt in my personal vehicle. But since being on the job and our mandatory seat belt use policies being implemented, the process has now become natural when boarding a motor vehicle.
Well last week, after many years of never "actually" testing the theory of "seat belts saves lives" I was subjected to first hand experience of crash testing a VW into the back of a tri-axle dump truck at a moderate speed.
I will attest to the fact that the dump body and tailgate made it all the way to the firewall, After forcing the door open with my feet, and self extricating myself... I can say that if I wasn't wearing my seat belt that night. I would have also taste tested an asphalt dump truck body after flying through the windshield.
Bottom line is this my friends, it is NOT just a lame motto... but SEAT BELTS SAVE LIVES.

this true. Seatbelts are extremely important. It doesn't take long to learn that in this profession(even without the personal experience). Glad you are ok. As a driver I don't move the car unless all my passengers are buckled up. It is not worth gamble...it only takes one accident mess you up.

This is correct. Last week my shift went to a roll over the driver was killed no seatbelt. The driver just happened to be a hunting buddy of mine. it just takes a mintue, and we could have been hunting all fall

Wearing seatbelts because you have to, and/or because you've seen (too often) the results of people not wearing them is one thing. To experience just how always going 'click' when you sit in a vehicle has just saved you from serious injury or worse is another.
People have often said that an injury 'was caused by a seat belt'. Explain to them about how much worse the injury could have been without a belt, can sometimes be hard. Sort of like the people who maintain that 'it won't happen to me, I won't have an accident'...
