What happens at other departments with the juniors
This disscussion is for anyone who has experience with a junior/explorer program. I am just wondering what other departments do with the junior programs. How often do you have training? How many members do you have? things like that. Thanks for your time. Stay safe brothers and sisters.

Hey Chris, I am the Cadet Program Coordinator for our dept. (www.kivfd.org) We are currently getting our program up and running. We have 6 cadets at this time. The cadets can attend the meetings and drills, etc. of the Senior company. They also have their own meeting the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. We have some form of training or we go on field trips. Most recently we toured the 9-1-1 Dispatch Center and the Maryland State Police Medevac Helicopter. I am working to setup some other field trips to the local hospitals, state EMS Headquarters, University of Maryland Fire-Rescue Training Center, etc. Currently we are starting a pre-basic training class for the dept. which the Cadets can also participate in.
Our county has a program through the Vo-Tech School that provides Fire and EMS Training to the students to help progress their career. A lot of the cadets will most likely take advantage of this program.

Hey Chris
I'm an Explorer up here in the great state of New York. Now the BSA ( Boy Scouts of America) Laws might be different than your laws. Anyways, Our post has about 5 active members, but only 3 are eligeble to run calls. We have training every tuesday ( only for the post), and wednesday ( involved w/ the fire dept.). Every second Monday, we also have training. There are somethings we can and can't do though. I'm not going to go too far into that because it's complicated. I hope I have answered your questions.

Our Cadets could only ride one per engine and with Chiefs permission. Well several times we would have alarms and I would be the first driver and see 6 red helmets in the back....trying to be invisible. Best thing our company ever did was start a Cadet program.

Its hard because they want to do "what the big boys are doing" so to speak and unfortunately the state says no and it truly is a hazzard because they haven't had the propper training to let them do certain things
Nothing unfortunate about keeping kids and those without proper training outside of a hazardous area. Some things just have to be waited for, despite the eagerness of the person, and firefighting is one of these.

If you are going to be directing traffic take the task to heart and watch out for those drivers. In Maine, you need to be at least 18 yo in order to do traffic detail. It seams like a petty task, but it is one of the most hazardous things at a traffic accident. I do not mean to say that VA is wrong for letting you do this, just be ever mindful of the dangers. When people are driving up to you, they only see the accident and lights.

Actually, most states do define such things with regards to child labor laws and so forth. The problem should really NOT be a state issue, but with more and more kids functioning on a fireground, I'm really starting to support even a nationwide standard to define what kids are allowed to do. I would have those standards mirror the rules as established by the Learning for Life (BSA) who established the Explorer program in the first place.
The problem is that way too many fire departments out there are either too weak to say NO to these kids and abide by similar rules as established by LFL, or they are too understaffed and resort to utilizing kids as adjunct FF's. Others may believe that some fireground functions just are not dangerous like defensive attck or in some cases...ventilation. So since many departments can't be firm in their own control of such actions, I would support a national regulation regarding kids on a fireground.

im a junior myself and my company does trainings every monday no matter what. but im ussualy at the station alot because i love it and we have a few people that are always there and 90% percent of the time they will help you just ask so i basicly train when ever..
