About Me:
I grew up in a small town in Western Maryland. My dad, who passed away in January 2010 was a Volunteer Fireman and would take me with him on calls in his 1963 Willy's Jeep. We lived next to the Fire Chief who would gather all the neighborhood kids every Monday evening to go the fire station to test the fire whistle at 6:00pm. It was great... by the age of 12, the Chief had given me a key to the fire station and said to never allow the trucks to get dirty. And I didn't, I practically washed the paint off, and loved it. As soon as I was old enough, I couldn't wait to become a member. I also immediately joined our community rescue squad and began running EMS Calls. In 2001 after 25 years working at Westvaco Corporation, I was lucky to be offered a job with the Architect of the Capitol in Washington, DC as the Safety Manager for the Library of Congress Buildings and Grounds where I continue to work today. When I took this job, I joined the Savage Volunteer Fire Company and in 4 short years was able to advance to the Fire Chief. In July of 2009, my wife and I decided to purchase a house and our travels brought up to our current home on Kent Island (Chester, Md) where I joined the Kent Island VFD and started over as a probationary member for the 3rd time.
Day Job:
Safety Manager, The Architect of the Capitol, Library of Congress Buildings and Grounds
Because of my dad, Francis Mowbray Sr. who was still volunteering up til he had a life altering Stroke. Also, I lived next to the Volunteer Fire Chief who was like a 2nd Dad to me. Both are now gone and are no doubt running calls at the real station 1 and the God Squad.
Why I Love Fire/EMS
I love helping people... just the other day a lady came out of her husbands room at the hospital and said, "I want you to know the nurse said you saved his life, I can't Thank you enough, I don't know what I would do without him". There isn't enough money in the world to make you feel as good as I felt when I heard those words. :)
Top Issues Facing Responders:
Ineffective or non-existent leadership. With effective leadership, most other issues go away.
