Firefighters vs. Paramedics
We used to show up in advance of paramedics due to the distance they had to travel. Besides basic patient care we would move furniture,assure access outside the residence and send units to direct the ambulance to the scene since often they were new to the area. All in all we appreciated each other and got along
Lately however there seems to be animosity between us. Whether it is due to competition for funds or because of a recent trend to accomadate ambulances with ambulance bays built in to some of the newer stations. Do they feel threghtened or am I the only one to notice this trend.

We have a great relationship with our EMT's. We work together well and regularly call on each other for assistance.

We get along well with most individuals in the EMS here, but, as with any group, there are a few that think they are "paragods." Especially lately.

In our area its just that there seems to be a money crunch so they are hiring less Paramedics an more Intermediates. Because of this plus the pay cut there is a revolving door an most if not all the personnel do not know us nor understand what we can do to help them. We used to have a close relationship an worked well. Now it is stained at best. We are beating them to their calls (private Amb-full time staff) an in most cases initiating care waiting for their arrival to transport. We continue to work at providing service at top levels in our community. Just seems that the Amb is more interested in the dollar then the service or patient anymore. My viewpoint anyhow?

We're all First Responders or EMTs so we are all part of the same EMS team and we each play our role and work together just fine.
We're here to help people, not play adolescent urination games with each other.

With my volley house's back home a lot of the emt's and medics work at a lot of the ems services in the area so we all know each other and work well with each other, plus a lot of them are volleys themselves and some are even line or chief officers. With the few I've worked with after I've joined the air force it's been a good working relationship. But I'm now in Colorado springs Colorado so I'm sure I'll run into that paragod who hates the fd

I have noticed that really attitudes are different in all sorts of places. There are is a sort of screw your buddy in ems in the texas panhandle. But ive noticed in the dallas ft worth area they are more for the patient care than the whos the best attitude.

In Philadelphia, medics are red-headed step children who know their place. They wouldn't even be able to form the words "fire monkeys". This Ralph guy is real trouble.

Thanks guys I guess I should try and clarify some points. I'm not the best communicator at times. Very rarely has this problem interfered with patient care, that wasn't my concern. In Ontario (Canada)the ambulance service is provincially controlled as is the f.d. just different branches with each region flavouring their own service.
When I lived in Ottawa the co-operation between us was outstanding. The odd incident always occurs and is to be expected. At that time we were just dipping our feet into the medical responses
When I moved to the Kitchener region I noted that the feelings weren't as toasty . We had a full time paramedic on our department and any time the ambulance showed up he would disappear. I asked why and was told by him that he would be ridiculed by his partners for being with us.
We are a rural department but I am an instructor so interact a lot with the city departments in our area. Discussions with them revealed that it was worse with them and on several occasions I was told resulted in the crews actually having to meet at a hall to sort it out
I'm from the side that respects our para medics and hope it will all sort itself out (it seems to be ) I just wonder if it's because legislation required an upgrade in paramedic requirements and at the same time we were required to improve our first responder skills so perhaps there was a feeling of competitiveness . Glad to hear things in the states seem to be a little better.
