Should firefighters be able to write tickets to people parked in a fire lane?
At almost every store or place with a fire lane there is always some parked there who just leaves there can and i causes a hassle to all of the other vehicles trying to get by. I think that we as fire fighters, more for chiefs and officers, should be able to warn on first offense and ticket after that warning.

Firefighter's are NOT cops... People inherently know that we are not there to 'bust' them. We are the good guys right? Folks let us into their houses and never think twice about firemen seeing things or taking something, or more importantly, busting them for doing something illegal or wrong. We don't make these judgement calls Brad. We don't care. Now I have to interject here that if you see illegal drugs, child endangerment or something along those lines, then it's a different story. Common sense certainly applies here. We respond to help folks in need and make problems go away, not create them. To change this mindset puts firefighters at risk, in my opinion... CBz

i see where your coming from and i agree but what if for example i changed it to not us giving the ticket but us "having" to report them to the cops. Would you report them or would you let them be. And the way i see it we help folks who need help not folks that are to lazy to walk a couple yards and are causing vehicles to detour around them, what if that caused an accident? not to be a wise one but its just a question and something that gets to me.

I'm with the Capt. Report them to the police if you wish, without making the offender aware that you are, but don't get involved otherwise. You seeing this a lot in your area tells me that the police really aren't enforcing it to begin with. Me, I hardly ever see this problem in my area.

Now your on track Brad. Let the cops be cops... not having firefighters do the cops job. And as far as our reporting someone... ABSOLUTELY! Nothing is more enjoyable than knowing that someone, who was arrogant to start with will now have to pay to get their vehicle out of the impound yard as well as both pay a fine and explain to a judge why they blocked a fire lane.

its not really my area, i live in a small town where every one knows every one else and i see it all the time in bigger or more populated areas.

but then again, if a vehicle is parked in a designated fire lane and you are involved with an emergency call where water access has been compromised... guess what you get to do?
and even if you are the mayor... no one is above the law...
Just make sure that you clearly denote where the fire lane or restricted parking area is located...
and when all else fails, post a sign...

Yeah, they should definatly be reported.... can't say that I would be the one to do the reporting but it is pretty frustrating when I go to walmart and almost everytime there is some 800 lb guy behind the wheel of his geo metro parking in the firelane so his 600 lb wife can load up all the cupcakes and twinkies she just bought.... on 2nd thought, yeah; I guess I would report them! lol

No, I think we have enough to concentrate on as it is...and we certainly donot need to start coming across as the "bad guy" in the publics eye....Don't you have enough to do....? If you tell me no, then I would look at your Fire Company and your FireHouse....and the training...both self responsibilities and overall....maintenance also would come to mind....when was the last time you putted the hand tools off the truck and cleaned and sharpened them...? Do you still know where everything is on ALL the rigs...? If you want to write tickets become a cop not a Firefighter......Paul

Ok, let me understand this. In addition to the training, responses, and other responsibilities, you now want to spend all day in court as the complainant? Have a lot of free time do you?
Here is what a lot of people don't realize. When a citation is issued for whatever offense, the officer issuing the ticket must show up on the court date. A lot of citations will be paid without contest, but the officer still has to be there. If the officer fails to appear in court, the case is dismissed.
I understand your issue, and parking in a fire lane could be a life safety issue at some point. But compared to crimes like burglary and homicide, I think the priorities are clear. Let's stick to what we do, and let the men in blue worry about the rest.

PEOPLE WHO CHOSE TO PARK THEIR CAR ON THE FIRE LANE HAVE ALSO CHOSEN TO BE GIVEN A WRITTEN TICKET FOR THE OFFENCE OF BEEN PARKED AT FIRE LANE, WHICH IS A SERIOUS OFFFENCE, BECAUSE THE LANE IS AN EMERGENCY LANE FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLE ONLY.
