I would get a wildland pack that has a sleeve for a hydration system that can cary all the mandatory equipment as well. I don't know of any that are made of FR material i.e. Nomex or Advance. Thats not to say they don't exist. The one you posted seems to be an Aussie product. Is it available in the US? It sounds like there's a story behind this too....care to share?
In Australia all the mandatory equipment is carry on the truck, so their really no need for a wildland pack.
I think the Aussie hydration pack is available in the US but why don’t you send an email to forest systems to find out
My strike team bag accidentally caught on fire on the 7/2/09 when I was involved in fighting the black Saturday fires. I don’t know how the bag caught on fire but I think it was due to the golf ball size ember flying through the air
or
when we got caught in the fire and had to drive through a wall of fire to get to safely.
or
when we were driving to a shed fire to rescue a person, the fire started to crown and burn straight across the top of the truck
attach above is a video of the my strike team and the black Saturday fires
Ah, that would be why you don't need a wildland pack and why you want an FR pack! That was a hairy situation you boys were in. If you can't find a pack that suits your needs then True North Gear does custom work.
All of the True North wildland packs are hydration pack compatible. And there bladders are taste free also. Unless you get a real cheapo unit, they are all taste free.
All of that plastic packaging is really bad for the environment.
It's not the best packaging of choice to carry on the wildfire line, either.
I prefer my two Camelbaks - they hold plenty of water, I can carry plenty of ice in it, and one of them is essentially a traffic vest that contains two liters of rehab.
I'll drink bottled water when it's the only way I can get it, but I've found that filtered tap water in a Camelbak does just as well and doesn't put lots of "forever" trash into the environment.
Could you wear a standard Camelbak (or similar system) under your shirt/jacket, with the tube sticking out? If so, it could save you some money by not having to purchase a fire resistant unit.
