So, most fire departments and EMS departments are ready for a large scale emergency ( my fire dept. has already prepared for handling swine flu) but what is everybody doing in their homes? Are you planning or have you already prepared you and your families for a disaster? What preparations (if any) are you doing?

I personally have purchased some items to prepare for an emergency that I keep stored in a plastic tote, but I admit, my family is not 100% ready, as I have not added food or clothes to this tote. I do have medical supplies, otc medicines, water, batteries, flashlights, matches, ponchos, heat blankets, toilet paper, germ x... that kind of thing in my emergency tote. What else should I add?

Anyone else making preparations or do you feel its completely unnecessary?

Google "preppers", it will give you all the info you need. Also emergency preparedness has a catalog they will mail you with useful stuff in it. I would like to think me and my family are well prepared and no I don't think it's unneccesery, although some people do get carried away.
I'd add a 30-06, a 12 gauge, and a 9mm. ;oP
9mm is to small, you need a .40
I also have a 45 long colt and a 20 gauge double barrel in mine. LOL Find some MRE's they are easy to store and last forever.
I agree Lt. Harmon, some do get carried away. I think I will leave the guns and ammo to my husband tho. I looked at MRE's but they are kinda expensive and I don't know how good they even taste. Does anyone? Maybe my family will just survive off peanut butter, crackers and canned food like spaghetti o's.
I'm currently in the process of putting together an emergency survival kit for the home.
Some MRE's taste ok but in mine I have food from "mountain house" it tatse great is fairly cheap. It also stores for 8 years I think, I go backpacking alot so I rotate my food so it don't sat long. That kinda makes me sound crazy don't it.
WOW! Sounds like everyone is preparing for Y2K;)…..I have a couple of cases of MRE’s stored in the decon truck and the normal self life is 5 years and I too have a .40 and a Remington 1100.
