WHY SUCH A LARGE GRASS/BRUSH RIG
NOW I UNDERSTAND HAVING LOTS OF WATER AND 4X4 ON A GRASS/BRUSH RIG IF YOU HAVE URBAN-INTERFACE WORK TO BE DONE. WHERE I AM FROM WE DONT HAVE 30,000 ACRE WILDLAND FIRES. WE HAVE 1 ACRE FEILD FIRES. WHY WOULD YOU NEED A LARGE DIESEL TRUCK WITH 500 GALLONS WILL ALL THE AMENITIES WHERE YOU DONT HAVE THOSE WIND FED WILDLAND FIRES. ALL YOUR GONNA DO IS BEAT UP A BRAND NEW $70,000-$100,000 RIG IN THE WOODS AND FIELDS? EVERYONE KNOWS THAT BIGGER MEANS HEAVIER AND HEAVIER MEANS IT SINKS IN THE SAND, MUD, FIELDS, AND AN OTHER SURFACE THAT IS NOT PAVEMENT. IN 10 YEARS I ONLY KNOW OF ONE FIRE THAT WE NEEDED A BIGGER RIG, AND WE CALLED FOR A STRUCTURAL ENGINE, PROBLEM SOLVED. I HAVE FOUGHT FOREST FIRES IN NEW MEXICO WITH BIG AND SMALL TRUCKS WITH FOAM ON THE SMALLER ONES AND I KNOW YOU NEED WATER IN THE WEST.

Maybe they wanted to show it off, Maybe they wanted to spend the tax payers money, Oh by the way 500 Gal. is not a lot of water, maybe you ment 5000 Gal. of water. I don't realy know what type of truck you are talking about. Do you have a make, and model of the truck. By the way, can this truck be used for other reasons, other then brush fires ?????? Oh, and by the way, most fire trucks do have a diesel engine in them. So my question is,
What's The Problem ?????

Is this the type of rig you are shouting about?
IMHO if you need a type III engine then you need it. If you don't, then it is a waste of money.

OBVIOUSLY YOUR RIGS SUIT YOU. WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT IS THE DEPTS THAT ARE IN THE THE NORTH THATONLY SEE THE 100 ACRE MAX GRASS FIRES. THEY ARE DROPPING ALL THIS MONEY ON F-550'S OR A LITTLE LARGER. THEY SAY THEY WANT THE ISO POINTS FOR A MINI PUMPER BUT THEY NEVER USE IT AT ALL. $100'000 TO DROP FROM A 9B RATING TO A 9A RATING JUST DOESNT SEEM RIGHT. WE HAVE GRASS FIRES THE DAY AFTER IT RAINS AND THE GRASS SLIDES RIGHT OFF THE TOP SOIL. WE RUN A 1987 JEEP C-J WITH 85 GALLONS AND A COUPLE GARDEN HOSES, AND IT MIGHT SEE LIGHT 30 TIMES A YEAR. NEIGHBORING DEPARTMENTS THAT RESPOND MUTUAL AID IN THESE "BRUSH RIGS" CANT GET OFF THE ROAD OR DRIVE, THEY USE THE BACKPACKS CAUSE THEY DONT WANT TO GET STUCK! WHY BUY IT IF YOU CANT USE IT FOR WHAT YOU BOUGHT IT FOR?

I MEANT 500 GALS. IF YOU HAVE STRUCTURAL PROTECTION TO DO YEAH I WANT MORE WATER, BUT IN MY AREA WE DONT HAVE THOSE THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT. MY TYPE IS A SMALLER MORE AGILE RIG THAT GOES AROUND TREES NOT OVER THEM.

Were i come from we have any were to tom jones lit his acre yard on fire to some redneck lit a 2 of 300 acrea hay field on fire we run a chevy 2500hd chasis any were from a 1995 to an 05 that are equipt. with a side winder...for when ur flyin solo....250-300 gal. of water and foam induction systems for when u gotta put out the old tire fires....yes sometimes you need a bigger truck but to be more agile and be able to go places you need smaller equip....we run three brush trucks and a tanker to almost every call and once in a rare while will we call for mutual aid.... we also equip. a polaris ranger for the extremely wooded and hard to get areas our iso rating is a 7 so yeah bigger trucks arent necessarily better but some times are needed..... the last truck we jst put in service this month cost 40000 equiped.

I dont know what the problem is exactly. You say that you run an '87 jeep and complain about OTHER departments that are using bigger and newer trucks. Not to be an a** but why does it matter to you what other deparments are wasting thier money on. That would be like me complaining that a department near by has a fire boat that they use maybe 15 times a year, but I dont because #1 i dont care, and #2 i am not on that department so I have no interest in what they waste thier money on. Sorry if that seems harsh again I am not trying to be an a** I just dont see the problem.

We have an F-550, no it's not tiny but it is what we need. My department can't afford a dedicated brush rig so we got a mini-pumper that can do everything. Another thing is terrain, we have mountains, when you go in you are going to stay for a while. You stated that you use a jeep with 85 gallons of water, that would be fine for a small field fire but what about the bigger ones?

Interesting, brush trucks are a hot topic. 80 gals of water around here just don’t cut it; most carry 150-300 and are filled by a tanker or engine from the road. Corn and bean fields in this area are mostly in 1sq mile plots and a fire can jump roads easily. In this neck of the woods your Jeep would just be a toy for the boys to play with, I’ll attach a picture of a similar truck that we have ordered. To give up a class A pumper for a brush truck for us does not make sense with a new one costing in excess of 100 grand we would have to give up our 10 year pumper rotation to have a pickup, which by the way has NO ISO value.

it doesn't matter what you use as long as you know HOW to use it . we run grass fires with a 1975 chevy 1 ton pickup with a 250 gallon foam/water skid unit and a 2500 gallon tanker to nurse from on the closest road , and if that doesn't get it there is that thing called mutual aid that works great
