Thanks for taking time to look join my forum....
My question stems from the issue of doing background checks on potential and current members. We require all of our applicants to sign a release to have a criminal, educational, and residential background check completed. I was wondering, what other departments use as their resource for doing these types of checks? Do you use the Sheriff's Dept., individual companies, or what other means are there???
Again, Thanks!!!!

Thanks for you reply!!
Well in my department we use the P.D.to check all apps to see if there is know history and are department officers check out the app too
Shonda, Our local Police Dept provides this same service to us. We have the same sign off of new applicants and we look at their background info before they are admitted to our Dept. I just talked to a Chief yesterday who didnt do this and now has a person on his Dept. who has Federal offenses on his Dept and some serious issues to deal with because of this deficiency in policy. In this day and age you can not afford to not do this.
We do the same . They send in the back ground check to the state police with 1o dollars. If it comes back good and they are taken in the 10 bucks is given back. We are just looking for the real bad ones.
What kind of things do they look for on the background check?
We, with applicant permission, have a private investigator (Retired PO) look at:
Driving record
Criminal History
Some Medical histories (depends on what if anything pre-employment exam shows)
Financial history (not in all cases only if there are indicators in other areas looked at)
He also verifies anything put on the applications such as certifications, degrees, work history, past residences, etc.
We have had applicants lie and conveniently leave out information in the past so they run SS# to find out where the person was working to make sure they match.
I should add we are a full time dept. Some of the work history may not matter as much to vollie Dept's.
We require all applicants to obtain a state police background check before they are considered for membership.
Local/state/Fedral checks in our small town that i know of
