Living in a military area, we had a FF from the then NAS(Naval Air Sta.) give a training session about once a year. Is your dept. ready to handle an aircraft incident. If you are anywhere near any type of airport, or hwy for that matter, you may be called to a scene like today's.
I'm an ARFF(Aircraft Rescue FireFighter) and we are stationed on the airport. If a plane goes down that's supposed to land at our airport, no matter how far it is from us, we will go out to it and handle the situation; however, the local city FD will not lend a hand. They consider it to a "specialized" form of firefighting and aren't trained for it. They'll help with water supply, but as far as man-power goes, we're on our own. At our department we have 3 crash trucks each carrying 3000gal of water, about 400gal of foam, and like 500lbs of purple K; 3 capts,9 ffs, 1 asst chief, and 1 chief. We run 3, 4man shifts. So you can imagine the chaos we would really have to deal with if there ever was an actual incident. But that is why we train everyday. TCSS

My local air port had a training session around this time last year. West Virginia University brought up some burn props that replicated a fuel spill fire, a wheel fire, an engine fire, and a cabin fire. We get called to the airport fairly regularly. They have a whole emergency plan in place (which departments get called for which types of emergency.) We're close so we get called for pretty much everything.
I think that is a little shortsighted. First in here was City fire because it happened in a residential neighborhood.
Your neighboring dept will beat you to the incident. And your crash trucks are not designed for structural firefighting. Any crash off airport is going to require mutual/automatic aid. Not water shuttling.
Im ARFF certified but thats cuz im in the Air Force Reserve. My Home department no one is besides me but however our county department does have a station on a airport. So theyd have to roll if it happen but our city is right off a interstate so ya kinda scary to think about.

I am the only ARFF certified firefighter in my department. We have an Air Force Reserve base 15 miles from us, and their flight path takes them directly over our town. The base fire department gives an annual training course to the local departments and they will also respond matual aid to a downed aircraft, should it ever happen.
Hope we never have to deal with it but feel well prepared to handle this type of incident. Fortunately we are a small community that only see's small planes coming in an out. I am more concerned with the flight path going right over our schools.
