I am looking for a way to workout at home. I am a volunteer firefighter, work full time, have a two year old, going to college and just got married. You can see I do not have much free time. Going to the gym has become virtually impossible.
I am looking for opinions on home gym systems. I am currently considering the Total Gym. Has anyone used this system for awhile? Did it work for you? If not, do you have any recommendations for me?
These systems can be quite an investment. I want to get the one that will work the best for me. My goal is to get into shape for paid fire department testing and to pass the pack test for Wildland Firefighting. Thanks to everyone in advance for helping me out and giving your opinion.
Bruce To me ,. I would concentrate on saving the money, given all you have stated is going on in your life,,and agree with the others there are numerous ways to get fit for the type of tests your looking at doing that dont require making someone else rich.... while the convieniance of having a gym in your space seems good, Your schedual says, to me something in the way in 6 months or a year that it might never get used... setup your own pack to practice for the test do body weight exercises as was mentioned and try to getthe vollies to shell out for the gym.. whataboutusing the weight room at school? just some ideas..
Bruce-I've been involved with fitness for approximately 31 years. (As a body builder, power lifter and now certified personal trainer for my FD.) I've used all types of home gyms and had many different gym memberships. Although you are right about going to the gym it sounds as though you have a full agenda and getting to the gym would be next to impossible. As I said I have tried many types of home gyms-unfortunately to get a really good one you will have to spend a little money. On the down side if you want to sell it you will never recoup your money. Oftentimes you will find it will only collect dust and serve as a great clothes hanger. Our department recently purchased the P90X program and have had excellent results from it. I do believe it will help you get in shape for any upcoming fit tests. You only need the program, dumbbells and a pull up bar-it can be done in your own home at your convenience. Hope this helps!? Take care and stay safe!!!
Hey Bruce. I have just joined this group.... I'm a life long fitness enthusiest and a Karate Sensei of 30yrs. I truly understand the battle with the "Time Bandits"... I have found that the core body exercises; Push-up, Pull-up, Chin-up, Dips and Squats along with the basic Dumbbell exercises allow for a complete body program... The key is to be disciplined to the completion and consistancy of your plan....
I have it and it works..... pull ups, chin uips, neutral pulls, push ups.....All Good! I feel with the addition of the perfect push up I have a complete upper body weight work out....now add squats and your good from shoulder to thigh... ** However, if you have not yet purchased these items, I would by the all-in-one dip/pull up/push up station by Gold's Gym for $199.99 @ Sport's Authority or Dick's Sports. **
I haven't tried the total gym, but I can say that any product that makes you work out and is fun to use can be effective or better than not working out. You would be surprised at what you can accomplish in a short period of time - if you make time for fitness. You should look at Crossfit.com, which combines many facets of fitness in a short period of time.
