why cant jouinors ride trucks

Friends and family are mourning the death of Roy Smith III, a volunteer firefighter and a junior at Spotswood High School.Around 1 a.m. Friday, he responded to a fire call, but he did not make it there. Instead, his car drove off the road, flipped at least twice, and landed in front of a home on the 1200 block of Island Ford Road.

I'm not going to diminish his death. But this was a 17y/o responding in his own POV. I don't think he should have been.

i under stand all of that but were i come from the depts dont let you do anything but the chifes say no thats the problom we should be able to get hands on but it all up to the depts i mean my bus driver got me in the dept and hes a asit chife and the main chife said i cant take ff1 and my bus driver and main chife had a disput about itbut we do not get pagers we have to bye every thing our slefs and i think thats nuts

Sometimes in smaller dept, you have to chip in and help buy some of the stuff. Sounds like you would be better off spending more time studying and learning how to spell before you try to become a ff. Believe it or not, you still have to know how to write as a ff and other people need to be able to read and understand it. Reports are part of being a ff. Good luck!!

We have a policy that they can ride but only one per engine and they must stay with the driver. They also have red helmets so eveyone knows they are Jr's or Cadets. We yellow frontice peices so we know probies. It's not a county wide thing yet only in our 7 company area.

wow, im 16 and on the volonter department, half the time i drive, strap on a scba, and run into the building

Is this the future of the Fire Service?
God, I hope not!

Any FD that relies on CHILDREN to respond to calls and fight fires isn't a fire department at all... it's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

James, the main reason of juniors cannot just easily ride in fire trucks is because, we recognize the dangers beyond our fire stations premises. Remember this, we had a saying "when you step on the fire truck, your other foot is already at your casket."

If you do get on the truck, just keep in mind your personal safety. Presence of mind - be compose, remember your training, and your task(mostly posted here - supporting task only). Be diligent to follow orders from your officer-in-charge.

Here we don't have junior programs, but sometimes by chance a son/daughter of fire chief, or firefighter can come with us during response. The members and his son/daughter is aware of our rules - stay on the truck.

If they are jouinor firefighters then I think they should be able to. If there is room on the truck then let them ride. I wouldn't let them go into a structure fire, but let them do what they can.
