I have a question for all you in the fire departments....this might be pretty stupid, but I was wondering if I could go to a fire department around my area and kindof hang out and see the firetrucks? Is this an ok thing or very not ok? I think it would be so much fun and to talk to the firefighters and just get to know them a little and hear their stories if they would tell them. I don't know how to approach them if its an ok thing to do. Any help? Thank you.

I take pictures of the different trucks and stations. I have a photot album dedicated to this. My dad got me started and Ive done it ever since. I have never had a dept. greet me badly.
Well I from what I know about my old Volley house. The old timers love to tell war stories to any one they can find listening. I now work in a paid department so we stay out of the house most of the day, we dont get many visitors out on my end of the back 40 but we do every once and a while have some of the kiddies come by station one and hang out for the day.
You should be able to go around and make friends from other departments that is how you grow your network of friends and can make new friends that can help you learn new stuff that you might not learn at your department. I know if I didn't network with guys from other departments I wouldn't have had the chance to go up to New York and go to Dennis Leary's FDNY Bash, and I wouldn't have be able to stay at Ladder 1, Engine 7, Battalion 1's house. That was a really fun time and I was able to meet a lot of guys up there. Networking is more than going to New York and having a good time by all means but it is nice when you get chances like that and have fun.
hey regina i dont think that there is to many dept that would turn you away just to come in and visit for a few like they all said take you son in and get some pics and hear some storys and if you come to the south im sure you would be more than welcome to stop by and have what we call a sit in.
Bake cookies, tell them you just want to say thank you & watch how many guys turn beat red then give you all kinds of information on anything you want to know. :)
You should feel welcomed in any house you go to. We are here to serve the public and since they pay for these houses and rigs, they should be welcomed. There are always a few "negative nancies" who hate giving tours or speaking to people as they walk by, but I make it my business to remind them that no one drafted you or twisted your arm to be here. you competed with hundreds of other people for the opportunity to call this house your house and without those people who just want to see the trucks and ask what you do, where would any of us be? We need to get off of our white horses and take off our shiny armor every once in awhile to just say Hi or invite a neighbor to lunch. I tell the new guys that when someone says, "Thank you for risking your life to keep this community safe" we should immediately say, "No, thank you for allowing me the chance to do so." So, just call the station, ask for the fficer, and ask him/her if it is OK if you come by ometime and when is a good time? He/she should appreciate your consideration and count you in for lunch.
LMAO
Whats the point of having a door in the front of the fire station if people can"t walk in? We are all part of a large family, and family drops in on one another from time to time! Feel free to stop anytime.
Well Regina i would just walk up and if somebody is there then say hello im so so from sta.### and if i can take a look at your sta. & Trucks most firestations would love to show you around and if there is a old timer there they always have a story to tell so good luck with it and hope you learn something from it
Not sure about the departments in your area, but our departments have a program called a ride-a-long. Of course you have to meet the age requirements and abide by the rules, but this will allow you to do one step better and actually ride the trucks on a call. Might be worth looking into.
Hey Cory, not sure if this is where I comment back to ya or if I should do it on your page, so I guess I'll just put it here so you know what I'm talking about. It is all about making new friends too isn't it? I'm glad you got to go the the bash that's pretty awesome.
That sounds like alot of fun Bulldog, I wish there would have been some workers there but they weren't. We did get a small tour of the dept here by an officer/firefighter and I thought that was real nice of him. Maybe sometime soon we can get another one so we can actually meet some firefighters.
