Does anyone besides me wish they would re-make the old TV series Emergency! as a modern TV show?

Don't get me wrong, I love Rescue Me, and liked Thrid Watch, but I can't watch them with my kids. I think if Emergency was remade with today's firefighters, EMTs and Paramedics are the basis, a more family-friendly yet realistic, action-packed and inspiring show could be produced.

If it was done well, I'm sure every firefighter in the Country would want their family to watch, and inspire the next generation of Firefighters and Medics.

Times change, and what was cutting-edge in the 1970's is kind of Hokie by today's standards. I think there's still enough of us Fans of Roy & Johnnie out there who would like to see it remade with modern cameras, good scripts and realistic firefighting action.

You got to keep in mind that, for the show to remain on the air, even the cable networks, it will have to have good ratings and ad dollars. To get those, the show has to have mass appeal. If every firefighter in the nation tuned in, that's a million viewers and a million viewers won't keep the ads or the ratings.
Why do you think Leary has so much "other stuff" going on in "Rescue Me"? It's not because he likes it. It's because he wants to stay on the air.
I vote MOVIE.

I fear that a remake as you mentioned would't be a family freindly as You would like to believe... Chet would be a perv or something... I dunno...Maybe someoen just needs to make a show that is actually family freindly and who would watch it with all the real life homicide shows as well as the hollywoodized versions... faceit Fire tv is boring compared to de crack dealaz shootingem up.. same thing happend in Jack webb's day, Dragnet was top, adam 12, top, Emergency.. just Ok...:)
I love the show EMERGENCY!... So much so that I made a whole bunch of really kewl Squad 51 t-shirts and other items that I have been wearing ever since.

It is amazing to me how many people outside of the fire service don't recognize this:

I actually had an older gentleman ask me if I was from the LA County Fire Department, when I told him "No, it's fromthe TV show" he looked at me like I was from mars!

I have this sticker on the back of my truck too:

Hell Yess!!! I am an Emergency! Nut!! I used to watch it all the time with my father, I had the Emergency! Board Game and played it so much the board was worn! I would love to see a current edition of it with Randolph Mantooth and Kevin Tighe as officers somewhere, maybe even paramedic instructors, or retired officers that " hang out" in the station a lot. I think it would be a great show to bring back. Rescue me, WAY TOO raunchy! Third Watch was ok in the beginning but than turned into ANOTHER police drama with fleeting glimpses of firefighting action. Everything today is POLICE DRAMA. Must bring back Emergency!, if you have a petition I will sign it, if you need a dum a$# for a stunt man IM THE GUY!!
Good Topic!

I just checked today Season 4 of Emergency come out on 1-29-08
Greenman makes a great point and for a perfect example of a re-imagined series look no further then "Battlestar Gallactica" on Sci-Fi. They took the campy, cheesy BSG from the 70's and reimagined it into a terrific drama. The original characters have made cameos and one is even a regular, albeit as a villian/politician.
There can be a great story made from the premise of Emergency, and we have to remember that Paramedicine was pretty cutting edge stuff in 72, today every podunk department has an ALS engine.
Why not have characters with the same names and god forbid, Johnny be a woman. Thats what reflects our fire service today. technical Rescue, WMD training (make it something that educates the public to what we do on a day to day basis), Swift Water rescues, all the things taht make up what we do today. Fire is so becoming as minimal a part of our jobs as horse drawn wagons were in the turn of the 20th century. Lets reflect that and give cretons who harp about our jobs being cush something to chew on.
I agree we need a family friendly show, but this time lets keep the fire scenes a little more Ladder 49 and a lot less Backdraft!
I miss Third Watch, and I never miss Rescue Me, and I have every episode of Emergency! on video. I wish they would do a re-make of the series. Even if they copied the original story lines from the 70's, but in a modern day setting. Even better would be to include some of the original cast members, (ie. Randy Mantooth as Asst. Chief John Gage). I think as long as they take the time and do it right, (no hollywood B.S.), that the show would be a hit. I should also mention that I had the Emergency! lunchbox when I was in grade school back in the 70's. And I waited for 3 hours in the hot sun at the Chicago Fire Academy in 1998 when Squad 51 made it's way to the Smithsonian. I got Randy Mantooth's autograph on a reproduction Squad 51 helmet front! Stay safe!
I was born in 1976, and yet I just fell in love with the show Emergency!! I still watch the reruns if I can catch them. When I worked in LA county for AMR, I had the opportunity to talk to one of the medics from the current "squad 51" while transporting our patient to the hospital. It was a trip.
yes johnny was good huh
Actually even after John and Roy ended the original, they attempted to make a sequel, but it didnt take off. It would be great if they made a mondern day version, but think they have attempted to do so with Third Watch and Rescue Me. Just hard to keep the interest of everyone whenit comes to our jobs........ some get a thrill from it, others turn off the tv or change the channel. Hopefully they continue with Rescue Me for it's about the closet thing to reality of the job...... except the non- wearing of SCBA..... kinda reflective of "Backdraft" and show us in non-compliant situations...... we all know its acting, but to kids they think that's how we really do it.
I loved that show. That was a big influence on me to join the fire service. I had major back surgery and was home from work for six months and I got hooked on third watch, but I was a little disappointed that they showed more cop stuff then fire & ems, but I still watch it all the time. I have my DVR set up to record it everyday.
