We just had a LODD funeral last week. The firefighter was from a neighboring department. We were directed to lower our flags, but no one was quite certain when to raise the flag back to full staff.

Is the flag supposed to be returned to full staff immediately after the funeral or at the end of the day after the funeral? If anyone can provide some guidence I would really appreciate it.

Thank you and stay safe

There is no clear answer. It mostly depends on departmental policy. As a general rule in my area, we would lower the flag upon notification of the LODD, and raise it in the evening before sundown on the day of the funeral. I have seen done both ways. The link is to the US Flag Code, which is a helpful guide to all flag etiquette issues.

Thanks
One thing should be mentioned when raising and lower the flag: When a flag is placed at half-staff, it is always raised to full-staff then lowered "ceremoniously" to half. Then for removal, it is returned to full-staff prior to lowering for removal.

Some may want to, as a gesture for a neighboring department, only have the flag at half-staff for a day, while if it is from your own, you may want to lower the flag to half-staff for an entire week.
Hi all, new member here. I wanted to drop in my 2 cents for what it's worth. I have seen several ways of doing this, much you all have. One thing I have seen is to lower the flag upon notification of the LODD and raise it back to full staff upon completion of the funeral. Again, this is one way I have seen and I apologize if I have repeated something someone else already said. Like said before, it is primarily a departmental policy.

I am a federal firefighter, so we do things a bit differently. Sorry for the loss to the department.

I'm not 100% sure, But I think its 6-7 days after the incident. This represents the greiving/morning period. Hope this helps.
