Throughout my career I have battled the bulge, and lost on a few occasions, but also spent the majority of it in pretty good shape.

That was until I came back after 4 and a half years of working in the private sector.

So when I decided to rejoin the brotherhood I was in decent shape from driving mud and staying physically active. Unfortunately....when I got on the job things were pretty relaxed and I was back to getting a steady check that meant i could eat a little better, and that led to me eating a little more. Unfortunately I didnt change my conditioning to stay up with the calories I was consuming now.

Fast forward to Fall 08 and I find myself busting out of my 40" waist pants and wondering how my wardrobe had suddenly dwindled to 3 or 4 shirts and a pair of jeans that would button. How the hell did this happen???

Now any of you that read my blogs know that I am doing the MS Bike ride in May and that has been a blessing to my waistline as well as my weight (now down 25lbs!) and that I exercise roughly 150 miles a week now plus core fitness at the station.

So back to the fat guy.

I have always had a problem with firefighters who were portly, Im not talking the guy with a few to lose or even the big guys, I mean the guys who were just plain fat. Well folks, that just plain fat guy was me, and I honestly dont have a clue how I let myself go that long without losing my mind.

See I love to ride and race bicycles. Go fast, take corners you HOPE aren't going to put you on the ground and generally make other riders suffer, just because you can. This has been my passion for over 20 years, my first organized bike race was in March of 1989 and I was hooked. It was childhood all over again. The freedom and excitement was something that drove me to ride an average of 2000-7000 miles a year for 15 of that 20 year span. Right now I am sitting at about 500 miles for the year and look to hit 5000 this season with room to spare.

So how did I just stop riding? I mean I am fit when I ride and fat when I dont. It is as simple as that, yet I get off the bike every few years and forget...

Im still fat, but not as fat as I was and by summer will actually be able to take my kids to the beach without looking out for dogooders who want to save the whale and push me into the surf!

Coo coo ku choo.
Christ; I thought I was doing good at 60 miles a week.
I plan on riding 5000 miles this summer...
But on the Harley!
Wally; you're an inspiration. I've been there.
You'll know it's worth it when you have to buy new clothes; small ones.
Hang in there.
Just tell yourself how much fun it is.
Forget the taters.
When you mash steamed cauliflower, they look just like mashed potatoes.
Mmmm.
I'm pulling for you.
Which reminds me; I need to get new tires on the Trek.
