So I was messing around on Facebook when I get this list of suggested friends. Normally they are people from school or friends from work, etc... but this time ther is a girl I don't know who looks familiar. So I clicked on her link and see not one common friend... not one. What I do see is everyone on her sampling of friends list is a brother.
Normally I won't just send a friends request unless it's a brother firefighter, or someone I know is a friend from the past, but this time I sent a message and quickly got a response.
This someone is very involved in the 9/11 rescuers health issues and after a brief couple of emails back and forth we came upon a great idea...
With the tenth anniversary (can it really be that long ago?) coming up in a little over 2 years, we decided to put together a bike ride from Boston to NYC the week before the anniversary.
Most MS rides make about $.5million to 3 million profit per ride. NOw that would pay for a lot of medical help for the guys and girls who are sick from the environmental waste they inhaled at ground zero.
So we are looking at a 4 day ride starting just after the end of the World Police and Fire Games and plan on ending at Ground Zero.
I will be adding to this as we get more information, what I can tell you all now is we are going to need lots of riders, and tons of volunteers...
The basics:
Goal: 3000 riders
Cost per rider: $45 plus $300 in donations per rider.
the rider entry will cover about 30% 0f the cost per rider...
That leaves about $650,000 minimum for the charities the ride will benefit.
Ride length: apx 225 miles
Average day: 58 miles
Why do this?
We are all aware of the 343 who died when the towers fell, but the cost is so much higher. By most acocunts we have lost between 700-800 more to lung issues nad cancer since 9/11. Upwards of 30,000 are sick and many are chronically ill and unable to perform their duties any longer.
