From the I thought I'd seen it all category.

It seems that civil right groups will have another thing to complain about. It appears that police in Australia used a taser to subdue a violent subject, and the man burst into flames.

Now I'm around officers almost daily who carry tasers, and have helped subdue violent patients where they have been deployed, and not once has this ever become an issue.

I guess the next thing we will see is a power setting on these things; rare, medium, and well done.

Many departments, in order to be qualified to carry OC (pepper spray), or CS (tear gas) must experience the effects of the agent. The same with the taser. I have often wondered why they are allowed to carry a gun, but don't have to "experience" being shot in order to qualify.

Here in Canada, the RCMP recruits going through "Depot" have to be maced as part of their training. The philosophy is if they are going to use the mace, they have to know how it feels first. I've talked to a couple of the members and they say it is some of the most excruiciating pain, but there's a pretty easy way to clean the stuff out of you're eyes (not just water).
As for the tasering, I'm pretty sure each detachment does they're own in house training with the device.

I had never really seen the effects of a taser in person up till about four months ago when we got called out for a medic assist for a pt. who had been tased. (tazed?) He was a little shaken up but certainly had not burst into flames.

On a lighter note, we had some cops hanging out at our station the other night and one of them had videos on his cellphone of new police recruits being tased for training. WOW that was freaking funny!!!!!!!! I'm glad we dont have to go through a test like that.
