I have noticed a lot of negativity in the forums lately . Personal attacks about spelling to the playing of word games to a persons beliefs . I don't believe this is good for us , i know some people that were on here at the first of the year that do not come on because of the attacks brought upon them by the " guardians of grammar " and the " spelling specialist " . Just because some one don't think like you don't mean they can't be useful or contribute to a forum . All opinions should be excepted and the people should not be made to feel inferior .

The text entry box used to have spell check (even though it went largely unused). What happened to it?

In my humble opinion, a spell check tool might solve the spelling problems here. I keep a dictionary by my desk for those words that I'm not sure how to spell. The only other advice I have to offer is for people to proof read their posts before actually posting it. Besides, even if you miss something, look at it again and you can usually edit your discussion posts.

I realize that poor spelling really is not indicative of your education level, but unfortunately that's how it's perceived. Not by me necessarily, but you get my point.

As far as bad grammar, people from different parts of the country or world for that matter, speak differently. Let's just try and get along without putting down our fellow Brothers & Sisters. The object is to get more members, not chase existing ones away! Stay safe people!

Folks

If you see someone attacking another user over grammar or anything else like that just let me know. I'll deal with it.

A spell checker would be nice, for those brothers and sisters who can't spell very well.
Bad grammar, that's a whole different story. I chalk it up to S H I T H A P P E N S !
Though some people are really bad with spelling and it is funny to read sometimes.
No need to scare people away though.

When a member corrects someone's grammar or spelling, I think what they are trying to do is increase the professionalism and image of the fire department
Mike, I respectfully disagree on this- there are members on this site that are going out of their way to attack people over grammar issues and having no other input into the discussions other than to crap on about grammar.

That's BS.

Whilst I agree about putting the best image forward when confronting media and the public when undertaking official and sanctioned work, this is an informal network that whilst I acknowledge is still being scrutinized by media and the public, etc, it is NOT a formal representation of a particular department or service.

You also need to acknowledge that there is a flaw with the current platform being used that does not allow spell checks and after a set period of time does not allow editting of a post- there are many people who would go back and often do like to go back over posts and amend or correct errors.

There is another way to look at this. For firefighters seeking to enhance the image of the fire service, bad grammar and incorrect spelling sends a clear message. I really think that it is better to put forward a positive professional image to the public. This means that you put your most articulate firefighter in front of the camera to communicate your thoughts, television interview or any other multi-media related process to the public. Can you be that person? Only if you’ve taken the time to learn how to communicate…

Representing your department, showing off a questionable education level is not going to do much for voter confidence when it comes time to increasing district taxes. These are tough times we are living in now. No wonder that all the new hires my department has done in the past five plus years includes a minimum education level for these new recruits that consists of at least a bachelors degree. But then again, these kids are working tons of overtime and making well over 100K a year because of it. Cream rises to the top and if you are reading this as a potential firefighter, listen up, do your homework, go to school, and be competitive in our profession. If you don’t then you will only dream of having the career verses actually experiencing it.

Now I understand that my perspective is different because where I work there are no longer any volunteer firefighters. We used to have departments around my county that offered this service but the required training requirements coupled with the liability issues simply made them go away. No one was happy about it, but it happened.

The FFN posts where folks are being critical of an individual’s inability to express themselves and be somewhat articulate is a problem that started with the local school system. When a member corrects someone's grammar or spelling, I think what they are trying to do is increase the professionalism and image of the fire department.

TCSS, Mike

if i have to spell right im in trouble one of the biggest problems i have seen on here is people start replying to discussions before they read them

I agree with you I am definately not a grammer guru but I feel like I have some knowledge to pass on or to learn from others on here. Its just silly to let a little bad spelling be an issue.

I agree with you Damon, unfortunately I don't know of any alternative websites like this where this is NOT a problem. Firehouse turned really a couple of years back, Techrescue has done the same and on it goes.....
