I was wondering how many people knew as a child that they would devote thier life to helping people? What was your biggest influences on your life ? What does it feel like helping people today?

I never expected to be doing this job five years ago. I didn't grow up around the fire service. I didn't know anyone who did this. No one in my family has ever done this. I had an adopted Uncle who was on the Fire Department, but he lived in NY. I heard several people who worked for the American Red Cross/4-H/Fire&EMS, etc... talking about how volunteers were needed in my area to do this. I finally stopped by my fire department when someone was up there, and asked what the requirements were. I was voted on 2 months later. I went through 36 hr FF training that March, and Basic school that fall. I recently completed my Paramedic training, and I can't imagine doing anything else. This fall, I plan to do 240 FF training. I've currently talked my brother (19) into joining (he's been on a year-- 36 hr FF, EVOC, First Responder) and one of my friends (EMT-B, 36 hr FF, EVOC). My sister is counting the months until she graduates so SHE can get on. I love what I do. I love helping people, I love the adventure and excitement and the knowledge that what I do makes a difference, whether it is a smile or an IV.

Well My sister went to nursing school when I was 4. It all started then. Emergency was a big influence, however it was also a family tradition! I got my LPN license in 1988 and Basic in 1992. My Paramedic followed in 1994. I took a few breaks in volunteering to have my children, but couldn`t wait to get back into it. Knowing your helping people is the greatest feeling in the world!

I knew as a child that i wanted to work in a field that would impact people's life's in a positive manner, but the tv show Emergency led me on the path of emergency medicine and firefighting. Been a paramedic for the last 21 years and in the rescue fieldn for approximately 34 + years

I beleave that GOD knows from the getgo that thier are some of us that are not happy with life unless it involves helping others! I knew that my job was to help when no one else would.I was like,7or8,when it clicked in.

I always knew that I wanted to be in the "people business" and saw law enforcement as the best way to reach out to those in need. Thus, EMS was a natural, second interest.

If it weren't for EMERGENCY ( 10-4 Rampart sending a strip vitals to follow) I wouldn't have been in this line of work. I joined the hometown rescue squad when I was 13yrs old has a junior member and started my upward trekk.
