BOSTON CHANNEL -- A firefighter trapped in a smoky apartment fire was rescued by several fire chiefs from surrounding towns on Monday. At first, other firefighters thought the 20-year veteran was getting some fresh air near a second-floor window. But they said they soon realized that he needed help.

If the flames were licking at my butt I'd go down that ladder sideways if I had to... :)

That is an incredible video. I have to agree with the other posts though; why was he alone in that building? I know that's the first rule at my department to never go in alone. In a more positive light, that was a great video to show the skill of the trapped firefighter to get down the ladder head-first.

I'm not going to say it's right but Firefighting in MA, much like in NYC, is very, very different and very, very agressive. I realized that when I got here to FL. I went to break a window at one incident and got my ass chewed. We don't break windows here, we ventilate, postitively. In Boston our attack line is a 2 1/2" line not a 1 1/2". There is no screwing around, they put the wet stuff on the red stuff and go home. May not be the right attitude but it works, most of the time.

I really don't know what happen or what was going on but one thing i do have to ask. Why wasn't someone with him? (Buddy System.) thats why we have guide lines and that is why they need to feel followed. No Matter Who You Are! Like i said i don't know what was really going on but i know what i didn't see.

Without knowing the full story, it's very easy to arm chair quarterback it, but happended to the BA, if he ran out of air, why and how? Where's the buddy system, where's the hose line or other method for tracing your way out?

So many questions come about from this....
