Found this 2-part video of a serious fire in Detroit. This fire originated in the obvious dwelling, then spread to the neighboring duplex.
Some background of this incident and some of the things people will notice:
- According to the description, this was the 9th arson fire in THIS NEIGHBORHOOD in ONE HOUR.
- The minimal use of SCBA. According to the comments, these crews had run FOUR fires continuously and their was no more air available when this fire was…

A conversation heard at a Midwestern fire department between Bobby, the Training Officer and his Chief:
Fire Chief: Go away, Bobby, I’m eating.
T.O. Bobby: Hey, Your Eminence, I have some good news and I have some good news.
Fire Chief: You know me, Bobby. Give me the bad news first.
T.O. Bobby: There is no bad news, Chief.
Fire Chief: There’s never no bad news, Bobby. This is 2010,…

I have a long time friend who is still serving as Chief of a small VFD. Their budget is small and they are looking for good quality SCBA at a good price. I have been doing some research for this friend on the different companies that sell reconditioned SCBA. i.e. Bunker Fire & Safety & Dalmatian Fire Equipment. Both seem like large companies! Has any one ever dealt with them? Is their equipment qood quality equipment, are they authorized by the manufacture to…

Excerpts from pipenozzle.com post on 9/11 in historical context:
9/11 will become a monument. But 9/11 has already become yet another powerful metaphor for the infinite stupidity of human beings, the infinite willingness to destroy. And 9/11 has become yet another metaphor of the infinite capacity of human beings to resist the worst…

Camden 9-1-1. We meet or exceed your fire suppression needs. Sir, I am sorry to hear the fire is now through the roof of your apartment building. Based on that assessment, would you prefer the…

This is the lead to a commentary I posted at pipenozzle.com on the blog there. It received a strong response, so I thought I'd post the lead here. To read the full entry, go to

"It’s tempting to mention the irony of Philadelphia firefighter John Slivinski, Jr. killing himself just after I wrote about PTSD, but it would be foolish to do so, because we don’t have the complete story on his death yet, and I hope we do get the…

DEDICATED TO THE RODEO-CHEDISKI FIREFIGHTERS
and the rest who risk their lives to save others
Once upon a time there were mountain castles
Standing proud against clear blue skies
Surrounded by green majestic forests
Red-tailed hawks and eagles soaring high
There were knights who protected the forest
Valiant knights with senses keen
Brave and strong not in shining armor
Gallant knights all clad…

Just posted some new content over at
Firehouse Zen, titled
The Way of The Chief. It is partially in response to a question posed by my colleague and friend Rhett Fleitz at
The Fire Critic about the future leadership of the fire service.
As always, I invite you to come visit and hopefully, you'll come back…

Well, its been awhile since I last posted. Hell, lets be honest, its been awhile since I last visited. Thought I would let you know how things are going to date.
As you may know, I was among the first DOT certified first responders in Pickens County, AL. In two years time, that number has grown to over fifty countywide. I am also proud to say that my department has about 15 certified responders out of about 20 personnel. Also, I am pleased to announce that myself & my Assistant Chief…

Among one of the greatest, and most historic debates in the fire service is the use of smooth bore versus fog nozzles. What’s better and/or safer etc.? A byproduct of that debate is hose stream selection for fire attack. The question is, do you use a wide fog pattern, a narrow fog (a.k.a. power cone) or a straight (or solid) stream for… Continue

Q: What Was Your Worst Call?
(Squad) My first call with the squad was an unconcious/unresponsive in the summer of 2010. The ambulance responded with 4 people, and myself and 2 other members responded in our support vehicle. When we arrived on scene, we came across approx. 12 people standing outside the house, 2 of them (which i knew) said "He's in the attic, please hurry!" We grabbed our gear and rushed up the steps into the attic. We found a 20ish year old male laying on the bed; head…

It doesn't work very well, it seems, to post something on the forums, as they just get buried in minutes. If you want to know more about our department and why I'm eager to share this message with you, I have spelled it out in detail on my blog at
Firehouse Zen.

Nothing does more to improve safety on the fireground than correctly stretching, positioning and using the first attack line (sorry Truckies). The question is, do we take our most effective life and property saving skill for granted? Do you know the WHAT, WHERE & WHY…
