- Why I Joined Fire/EMS
- Always wanted to tiller. It was obvious growing up in Buffalo the "Good Guys" rode Fire Trucks. Every time some negative event happened , the Firefighters were the first ones there to help. They always made you feel that they cared - they smiled , even after collapsing on someones lawn after a gruling fire.
I joined the U.S.Army in 1971 - Joined BFD in 1985 -

The little "Red Book" and how it affects you as a Firefighter !
Does your Department have a written "Agreement" between your Union and the Town , City or State that holds your contract ?
Do you know what "Rights" you have under this agreement ? Are you shure ?
Unlike this copy - is yours updated and when was it published ?
Under what circumstances can you be "Terminated?" - Are you shure ?
To what degree does your Union and Contract protect you from "Personal , Political , Race , or Job discrimination?"
Are you "Guarranteed Due Process" at "Departmental Hearings?"
What are your "Rights" when your being verbally repremanded by a "Superior?" Can your answers get you "Terminated?"
I will attempt to go through this book with you , this book is known as the "Red Book" in the Buffalo New York Fire Department.
As our Union President answered , after being asked about its content - "You don't have to know - we (Union Officials) have to know how to use it if you get in trouble ! " May 05,2010 - We have a new President and Eboard. :)
Disclaimer: This is NOT an indictement of all Unions , Union Members or Union Reps. I have been a dues paying member of the U.A.W. for 13 years - a dues paying member of Buffalo New York Fire Department local 282 for 23 years - I am pro Union - I am also pro-information and rights guarranteed under our constitution of the United States , Civil Rights , Gun ownership and believe in Political Freedom of Speach / expression . Enough said on those points.

Day One:

Buffalo Fire Department - over time - whats the cause - who's getting sick of what ?

Is overtime in the Buffalo Fire Department is out of control? Many fear it could hamper FF's ability to negotiate a new contract. Some Union Officials blame it on manpower, some feel sick time abuse may be partly to blame. Whatever the cause or causes - some changes must occur as taxpayers are growing tired of increased taxes.
