My Training:
I am a Virginia EMT-Enhanced, and if everyone here at the station has their way about, I'll hopefully be a NREMT-Paramedic in 2 more years...we'll see... =)
About Me:
I always hate describing or talking about myself, but if you really want to know, just ask me. For the broad overview, however, I am in my mid-twenties, single, and spend about 85-90% of my time on an ambulance. I have my BA in International Relations, but after an internship after graduating college, I realized that government was not for me. But I'm hoping to participate in the VAVRS Exchange Program in a few years, I love to travel and experience other cultures. My friends, 9 times out of 10, become more like family than friends. My family, my friends, and EMS are my life. And while I know that change is a necessary, normal part of life, it usually scares the hell out of me.
Day Job:
I work for a paid EMS agency 24/72 shifts...I love this work schedule, it's so perfect for me. =)

Why I Joined Fire/EMS
Honestly, I never thought in a million years that I'd be involved in EMS in any way shape or form. My cousin, to whom I used to be really close, was a member at the rescue squad and that only way I could ever spend any time with her was to hang out there. So that's what I did, and then I was allowed to do a couple ride alongs, and well I was hooked. I joined the squad in April 2007 and by August 2008 I had got my EVOC, EMT-B, and EMT-EN....go figure. =)
Why I Love Fire/EMS
even though the pay sucks and you feel underappreciated most of the time, the one time you do hear a "thank you" makes it all worth it because you know you made a difference in someone's life in his or her time of need.
Top Issues Facing Responders:
VA doesn't pay EMS personnel what they should make. Lack of support, equipment, supplies, & overall lack of personnel in volunteer agencies is rough.

The "JOYS" of paid EMS, or EMS in general...(I just needed to vent)...

Posted on January 18, 2009 at 2:16pm 5 Comments

I work in paid EMS 24/72 hr shifts, which I love--MOST of the time. I also volunteer practicall 24/7 on my days off. I just wish that people who call 9-1-1 just before midnight for an "illness," and who walk out to meet your ambulance BEFORE it's even in park in the driveway, who's only complaints is nausea & vomiting and pain "all over," could be told to just take 2 ibuprofen, a drink a glass of water and go to bed. Seriously, if you ask for pain meds, you ain't sick and you DON'T need me,… Continue

Welcome to the nation from Ohio. Just one comment to a thing you said in your "Top Issues Facing Responders". You said VA doesn't pay what they should. I don't think that is a VA thing. It is a nationwide thing I believe. At least where I work in WV. So, just wanted to let you know that you are not alone in that aspect. Take care and stay safe.
