maybe you can put it on the far edge of your property... and hope your dog is not smart enough to find it... or too lazy to wander that far...

or perhaps you need to start keep treats available to lure her elsewhere ???

my one friend keeps a tilled corner of their garden just for their homeless cats - since the cats are more inclined to readily use soft "scratchable, moveable" soil to poop in.... and tilling the area (even with a pitch-fork every few weeks or months, turns the poop into less annoying soil)

.

and that is how you litter box kittens - you put their poop (from the floor) into a little box and then they start to "smell" that is "their" space

now about the crapping issue - create a dirt pile - just for crapping... then shovel up all the area poops and stick them in the dirt pile and the cats will think that was their assigned little litter box all along

remember you don't want the food in general to be too close - since you still want them to have a little "hiding" ability should other entities sneak near their food bowl - they won't see their sleeping quarters and try to move in...

.

it looks great with some wind block from the bldg. bales of straw around it would help with wind and snow too

good job Jim ... try moving their blanket nearby it during the day and food nearby it.. then if you see them follow the food and their blanket, then move the blanket into the shelter

it took my kitties 3 days to 'warm-up' to their shelters... i found the little cat nip snacks helped - since it an an alluring smell to cats - so I make a trail of snacks from their food dishes (which are about 8' away) into the various shelters

.

i have noticed now when it rains or is really windy. my kitties will only leave the shelter to eat (covered food area) then immediately return to the shelter

remember how I said I was using bath mats as door flaps - rubber side out, fuzzy side towards kitty sleeping area... one of the older kits got scared by not being able to see out of the shelter, so I took the door off for a week until she felt in charge, then put the flaps back up and now she has made it her permanent cave... which is good... since I think she will not live through this winter she is so frail :(

and we had a big rain storm last night which impacted the colonies night feeding, so randomly when I went this morning there were a bunch of tom cats all lined up together - which I did not know were part of my colony - waiting for me to feed them... then all the normal colony members (lots younger & females) were standing back 10' waiting for the Toms to finish... usually I see the toms come eat about 11 PM... so now I think there are 14 members to this colony... since there were clearly not visitors to the colony they were clearly regulars, just ones that must lurk around when I sleep (hee hee)

one final thought on this matter - feeding the homeless kitties KITTEN FOOD during the winter will help them survive better - higher protein, fat, and calories - they can eat the same amount and yet get a thicker coat and gain weight as well. I leave large bowls of food out all day for the colony, then pick most of it up about 1 hour after dusk (to keep it away from skunks and possums and coons), then again around 10 PM, I feed the colony another few cups (which is what I think when the toms usually come and eat, but i noticed when it is cold the entire colony comes out at 10 PM for another meal)

Hey everyone - got a lovely stomach virus all week - knocked me flat on the bathroom floor for days... if you get my drift...

Jim sorry things are so piled up on you... be brave... this season will pass...

as far as the kitties - remember the thing that gets them is hypothermia - from wind - and then being wet - so even a wooden box (like a dog house, especially if it has a swinging doggy door they can sneak through) will keep them out of most of the wind at least.
