The Backroom Crew

This is a place where we can sit down, put our feet up and chill. Where the Boys and Girls can just be themselves. The Back Room or what most firefighters call a ''day room or rec room'' is the social point of every firehouse.

If your department SEES you trying to get to 100% of the calls - they will SEE your commitment and you will get A LOT of respect.

For a few years, I made 90% of my calls - and quickly the members of the department learned to rely on my presence at calls... and several members came to me and specifically told me that they FELT better knowing that when they got on-scene, they were pretty sure that I would be there and have their back !

I was honored that they came to look upon me as a pillar for the dept, not a flake...

ok, gotta run... homework is screaming for my attention...

focus on what is best for your department, not for you personally... give that a few years... and then you will have clarity...

been fun chatting...

thanks for hearing all my interesting (stories) and examples...

and when you meet my siblings - you swear you will not tell them I have been talkinga about them RIGHT !!!

yes - that will work..

MASTER your department
100% calls
100% trainings
100% building their team
100% expanding relationships in that department
100% learning their way
100% commitment

You got it !

I mostly just wanted you to think think think !!!

We asked 5 members to leave our volunteer dept, because their "belonging" to other departments weakened our dept and we learned we could not COUNT ON THEM to be all-in with our team...

we had a guy on my dept that was f/t time on another dept - so we hardly ever saw him at our volunteer dept.

he pretty much never came to training, never worked alongside us at training or calls, and would show up at large random structure fires - by then NO ONE trusted him as part of the team - and NO ONE wanted to go into the structure with him - since he was not around enough for us to even consider him as part of the team anymore - or trusted him to know how to work "with us" or "command us" - regardless of his "skill"

so what is my point?

I would NEVER let a FF join my dept that was on more than 1 other dept - because then they are a half-ass firefighter... and only committed less than 1/8th of themselves to my dept - which makes them a liability NOT AN ASSET

So when I am on scene with my sister and she is there doing EMS (with one dept) but I need her help cutting the car apart to get to the patient (a FF task) am I in trouble if I (make) her work as a FF to help cut the car apart - since I out rank her on the 2nd dept - CAN'T I ORDER HER TO HELP ???

since we are trying to save a person's life - do I care who's department she arrived with or do I care about SAVING a life more and thus am willing to skip protocol ???

Jim said it perfectly - like being torn between lovers.

But you may not yet understand that at your age.

You will start hating yourself for NOT being present and fully-committed to each dept.

and the (some) other FFs will start feeling the same way towards you

So my sister is a EMT on one dept and a FF/EMT on another - when both departments are one scene together - can she shift back in forth between FF / EMT duties, if she arrived with the dept in which she serves ONLY as an EMT ?

EVEN if they need FF skills on scene ?
