This is a place where we can sit down, put our feet up and chill. Where the Boys and Girls can just be themselves. The Back Room or what most firefighters call a ''day room or rec room'' is the social point of every firehouse.

Good Good if someone else has advanced language skills in both English and Spanish perhaps they can bridge the gap... if he still struggles, it may be a learning disability and it may make him eligible for ADA accommodations during the test
My friend said firefighter language is a unique language that does not have matching words in Spanish which can also influence test results........ much like the English word Fair - does it mean equal, does it mean a carnival, does it mean pale skinned..... so he needs to learn particular words used in a particular setting have a particular meaning
Jim - I spoke to one of my friends who teaches English as a 2nd Language students - she had two suggestions for you:
1) Find out what sections of the test the FF is failing
2) Have him tested for learning disability - she said that one can have no disability in their primary language, but they may have a processing disability in another language...
.
Spanish is a language that is very phonetic - sounds equal the letters - so it makes it much easier to read and write... while English is a very complex language and can create a huge barrier during stressful situations
*GASP* YOU HAVE A HEART !!!!!
.
NICE !
Morning all.
Well I get to interview a new eye doctor on Friday. I seriously wish this would be over. Oh well crude happens for a reason.
I got to see the new kittens that the neighbors cat had on our place. OH SO FREAKING CUTE!!!! If I could get near then I would take them in to the humane society. But boy where they hissing and spitting like no tomorrow. I set some fresh water and a bit of food nearby so that momma could have a rest from hunting.
especially since you can ask clarifying questions
The Speak Easy are live people who talk on the phone - maybe that would be less confusing for him ???
.
nothing is better than a live human to help usually
there are also places you can find online that will provide written language interpretation - he could get the study guide interpreted that way into his native language
there are language translation apps for cell phones... there are also call in phone language interpreters (we use these in social service alot) by which you can call places like "SpeakEasy" (google it) and they translate any conversation LIVE as it is happening into another language - maybe he could use that during the test.. or at least during study time
maybe call around to a few neighboring FDs and ask if any of their FFs are fluent in Spanish who can help him study in his native language
