The Backroom Crew

This is a place where we can sit down, put our feet up and chill. Where the Boys and Girls can just be themselves. The Back Room or what most firefighters call a ''day room or rec room'' is the social point of every firehouse.

clearly since I am as old as dirt (making Jim OLDER than dirt) I can't remember my first fires...

the one that sticks as my FIRST - was my first fire death - was a horrible house fire in which a man died - who I had done patient care on dozens of times - so I felt like I knew him... Harold. I remember every second of that call, like it happened yesterday.

I remember being on scene BEFORE any water, for several minutes, to a fully involved 3 story house fire, and helplessly standing there knowing he was 'probably' trapped inside. He was 80+ elderly years, hoarder, who lived alone, no family ever to check on him, and he literally was trapped to death. His literal ONLY exit was on the end of the house where the fire started.

By the time we axed through his front door, which was buried shut with newspapers, we found him sitting on the staircase headed to the upstairs of his house, which ironically was directly in front of the front door we were working to enter. And which is ironically one of the things the fire department repeatedly made him keep clean.

There was a door at the bottom of the staircase, as was the case in old homes. He had shut the door and sat on the staircase, waiting to die (or be rescued). We found him promptly sitting on the stairs, dead (we would never have found him for 20-30 hours if we had to search the rest of the hoard) he was 1/2 vertical burned as fire was traveling from one of the house to the other and had just reached the stairwell section.

he died of smoke inhalation - long before the actual fire reached him... which was quite clear as we stood outside of the house with no water... it was clear, there was no hiding places left in the house for living people...

cause - electrical wire short (from hoarder-ville)

the day that fire happened all prior fires just blurred and paled in comparison
