Three people were killed after a 2003 Jaguar pursued by the California Highway Patrol for a suspected traffic violation tried to flee going the wrong way on a freeway off ramp and slammed head-on into a 2010 Nissan Frontier pickup Saturday night.
A CHP officer tried to stop the Jaguar traveling southbound Interstate 215 at about 9:47 p.m. when it entered the wrong way on an off ramp coming from the 60 freeway, a CHP news release stated. The CHP officer broke off the pursuit and lost sight of the Jaguar.
Seconds later he saw smoke rising from around the bend of the off ramp. He drove down the off ramp and found the Jaguar had collided with the Nissan pickup. Both people in the Jaguar and the passenger in the pickup suffered fatal injuries.
The CHP identified the driver of the Jaguar as a 26-year-old Moreno Valley resident. The city of residence for the passenger in the Jaguar was unknown, while the people in the Frontier were identified only as a 53-year-old and a 23-year-old, both from Riverside.
The Riverside County coroner on Sunday identified one of the victims as 53-year-old Emeliano Perez of Moreno Valley. Perez was taken to Riverside Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:20 this morning, a coroner's news release stated.
The coroner identified the other victims as two males from Moreno Valley. Their names have been withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The CHP is investigating the crash.
