the practical skills in ny wasent all that bad. we had 6 station. a truama assesment, medical assesment, spinal imobilization (eather backbord or ked) bvm and airway managment station, AED/CPR station and the 6th was a random skill u got to pick. i laughted because the random skill i got was 02 admin. i was the only one to get the easyiest skill....... think when i recert ima do onsite testing for the written (in onsite if u pass the issue ur card on site)

Felicia your doing great keep it up all that stuff you think u need to feel like your a member will come its not what you wear its what you do . as a Chief i rather see someone busting there ass and showing the old F.F. up then be all dress up looking good... there might be a money issue to times are tight right now.. have you talked to your chief. and asked why you dont have a pager. but anyway keep your head up it sounds like your doing great

Justin, Awesome job on your testing. I am sure you did very well with the written too. How was the practical skills there in NY? When I took my in CT, we has 7 stations, 21 evelutions.....it was really intense....smiles.

Hi Norman,
I hear what you are say. I love my department, and they are good people. In CT I responded as often as I could, did all that I could and helped where and when I could. My "avitiveness" or lack there of is mainly because I don't have a pager just yet. I have a scanner, and not sure of our tones just yet... New gear and Pagers are on order....the Chief is aware of my situation (and others in my situation) and after 6 mos with the depart, I should get all new turnout gear. It's the "waiting" process that I guess is my main concers. In CT, my departs had gear and pages for me right at the start.....so perhaps I became spoiled.....LOL. I am not the person to sit around and be directed my duties, I like to fine out what is expected of me and follow though....smiles. Yes, I am very dedicated to the fire service and ensuring I learn as I fight. I think most of my limitations are based on waiting for my certs to come in, so the department knows for sure that I am FF1 trained and certified before letting me run full board -- and I understand and respect that. There are way too many LODD these days and I know my department is only procting me, my fellow members, and the station as a whole.....(insurance). I will pracitice, train and show them I am a strong open minded team player, giving 100% of my self as I have always been known to be/do.

well i passed my nys practical skills test sat. actually i aced them. took the writen tonight and im pertty sure i passed that aswell. its sad ill get my emt results back before my state tax return i filled in feb.

Felicia,
Congrats on you dedication to meet all requirements for Level 1...especially the commute to CT. That is dedicated.
Why don't you feel "active" as you'd like? Your willingness to be active and participate are only limited by YOU.
At time you must take action on your own to get answers. Here is a small start, yet none of us knows all that is involved. You can get many answers here but the true answers your looking for are at the FD your talking about.
Sometimes getting the right answers is by asking the right questions to the right person(s). If you need too, ask questions up the chain of command until you reach the top and you get the answer to your question - ANSWERED.
It may not be the answer you're expecting, you want to hear or will make you happy, but you might be surprised with what you hear. Communication is the key to success and communication is only communication if you're willing to ask, talk or seek advice, etc.
Take a few minutes at the next meeting and seek the answer to your concerns and questions.

Chief France,
It never gets easier regarding funerals.
My first year in as Chief, a great friend and fellow firefighter passed away from cancer. Prior to his passing he called me at work asking I stop by after wards so he could talk to me.
When I got to the hospital he asked me to hold his hand and listen to what he was saying and was about to ask of me.
He told me he was at piece with God, he wasn't going home and after a discussion with his wife he asked me to do the eulogy at his funeral service. That hit me hard. Here this man was telling me he was dying and as he told me my heart was being ripped out. I was about to lose a great friend and one of my members in the FD who gave his heart & sole to the FD.
Here I was the new Chief and one of our own was going to pass away as I watched. It was a tough situation and one I wanted to full fill with a heartfelt words of kindness for him, his dedicated, devoted and passionate service to the FD and for his loving family.
I got through the service with a few tough moments and many tears. The service was memorable for all that attended. Many people got up and talked about their involvement and memories of Jim.
After the service his family thanked me for all that the FD had done to HONOR JIM and especially for my eulogy and great words of kindness and compassion.
That is one service I will never forget. I know how you're feeling. Hope all is better and you enjoyed the beer.

I wanted to say HI to you all and see how everyone is doing. I am Felicia, but friends call my Flee….smiles.
I feel like a cadet sometimes when I go to our training nights at the station. See, this is my 3rd dept within 18 months. I was (well - still) a member with 2 stations and 1 EMS service in CT, I had just made my 1st year with them and was transferred to NC (military). Now I am a Probee once again....smiles. I managed to finish my FFI training, taken my Practical’s and written exam all in CT – commuting from NC to CT for the last leg of the classes/exam dates. I am still waiting on my certs, however my instructor let me know I have passed….85% final grade. I really like my NC fire department, I just don’t feel that I am being as “active” as I would like. I have no pager, not qualified gear for interior fire fighting, and no shield on my helmet to at least indentifies me with the department. The no shield is what bugs me the most….though “on-order”, it’s still just not right… How can they expect me to be pro-active and respond when I am not give proper equipment/communications….?????

the back rm is what keep the members together. a nice cold one and some b.s.ing. how alot of problems and issues get settled and have fun at the same time..and Happy late st. patties day
