The Backroom Crew

This is a place where we can sit down, put our feet up and chill. Where the Boys and Girls can just be themselves. The Back Room or what most firefighters call a ''day room or rec room'' is the social point of every firehouse.

Hey Chris - sorry to hear about the grant rejection response. I could send some people to beat them up - if you like :-)

Hi Patti - welcome to the Back Room - watch closely, the sharks make circle... but they are really harmless... they will just lick you a few times to make sure you are tasty enough to play in their waters...

I will pass that word around that you are one of the tasty ones... and for them to treat you well !!!

Yeah, Ralph I hear ya. Having been on several Maydays and several "non-mayday" missing FF events, I know that everything is not reported in the news. And when it is something embarrassing like FF screwing around, the FD covers it up and tries to deal with it internally - as though nothing happened. And can not even tell you the number of things I have seen which were covered up to save face.

AND having been on scene when we were called out of the building due to LONG HORNS BLOWS - I remember one of those days, that it turned out a rookie on one of the departments at the working structure fire thought it would be funny to blow the horn. It took 20 minutes to get everyone accounted for and actively resume internal fire attack.

And the more I see people taking videos on scene and random online chatter about "what is going on IN their department" the less I am surprised that some youngster might post something that would be seen as private by us older people or that would be seen as only part of the story and therefore should not be shared yet. It seems like the younger generation has a different filter system than the older people. And I could see if a rookie member was told to go sit their ass at the station and watch the phone or wait for other calls or whatever, then they might be sitting around thinking they could tap into their "online" brotherhood for support.

But then again, I am sure "the seasoned" ones on my department found me to be a pain in the ass at times and found my judgment to be under-developed at times...

Most of those "seasoned" guys I would not want as my officers, I think a bunch of their ranting showed an extreme lack of judgment in public leadership and abuse of another person.

So it seems the post "Missing FF" is missing. So I don't know what happened. How sad and horrible any direction it went. I just hope everyone is safe - even if it was a FF on unauthorized leave from a scene or rookie making drama.

Thank you all for hearing my thoughts on this matter without beating me. I may not have joined the final party line - because of my personal experiences with missing FFs - but I appreciate the respect you all show to my viewpoint on the situation. THAT is why I am part of the Back Room Crew !!!

yes - the whole thing is sad and concerning either way it turns out. I am less concerned about the kid's excited utterance post and more concerned about the FF. Not all FDs are equal, nor is protocol. My department has managed 7 different scenes simultaneously before - so who is where is not always easy to keep track of. I personally made a physical appearance at 4 out of the 7.

I have had to do search and rescue several times for "missing FF" - I can not even tell you how scary it is - if you have not experienced it. And like I mentioned - THANK GOD - a few times the results ended up being "FF screwing around" - which for me is a much better outcome than dead or injuried - which I have also been involved in. I did not post this stuff on the primary conversation because I am not trying to air dirty laundry or get into fights with seasoned FFs who can not hold their tongue until more information has been gathered. Public beatings are not a sign of leadership or mentoring.

The lack of information provided on that missing FF and the lack of any real info on that persons profile leads me to believe its crap , in any situation anywhere in the world , someone goes missing you dont leave a scene , military saying or not "no one gets left behind" is something we stick to , us seasoned people know better than to leave one of our brothers or sisters behind , it is one thing that is drilled into our heads time after time day after day and call after call , alot of these younger explorers and juniors are not allowing any of this information to get in there heads , you are not a super human even with as much as alot of like to think or have sorely found out by chance that we are not , the fact that someone would even post something of that nature while even supposedly on a scene disgusts me beyond belief *steps off soap box*

Hey FW - I have no idea - hoax or not. I will always err on the side of caution. Not the side of gang banging attack without more facts like a bunch of the seasoned guys are doing - that disgusts me far more than the kids actions !!! People don't make sense when they are worried, and not actually on scene, (think of the million 911 nonsense calls made about real events, just inaccurate details) she may be making no sense since she had 2nd hand info or was upset.

Several times I have been on scene with a missing FF - it is horrible!!! One of my Chiefs died on scene and was missing for 20 minutes. On at least 2 other occasions the missing FF was just F'g around for hours - such as left the fire ground unauthorized, then did not respond to their pager or radio because they knew they were in trouble. The F'g around incidents did not get reported in the paper, they were dealt with internally. So outsiders would think it a hoax - but a missing FF was very real at the time.
