The Backroom Crew

This is a place where we can sit down, put our feet up and chill. Where the Boys and Girls can just be themselves. The Back Room or what most firefighters call a ''day room or rec room'' is the social point of every firehouse.

I am looking forward to tender lessons. I have asked that we do this during the day time so that I can see what they are doing. It is a 10 speed, 5 hi and 5 low... should be interesting, but hey I am up for it. If I have to go on calls by myself I do have the support rig. They prefer it is we don't POV it.

Man, did you ever get some folks upset Patti.

Don't worry, I got you covered. I don't completely agree with you, but I understand what you're saying and you make some great points.

Yeah, you been yelling a little loud lately, can hear it all the way over here in GR. LMAO

It didn't really hit me because of my FT job, I drive different trucks and equipment all the time--and have my CDL--so operating fire apparatus really didn't seem like anything out of the ordinary. Pulled my first trailer when I was 15 with my permit, my dad was big on throwing me into the water and sink or swim type learning. I was scared to death, but I did it.

But once I started riding with some select other people before I knew how to pump, that is when I started getting scared. What was even better was we still rode tailboard. Talk about some wet\cold\wild rides. Still miss that somewhat. It was a blast in the summer.

I never drove anything bigger than my Sonata until I drove the engine for the first time. It is done on drill nights and on weekends until I can safely pass the driving course. Captain said when I can drive him in the engine without scaring him and take it up Ira Hooker in reverse then I can drive code, until then.... pratice only..... First time I drive it I was like Holy Cow and Mother Teresa!

I agree Ralph, why in God's green earth firefighters are exempt from CDL requirements is beyond me. You have guys and gals that may have never operated anything larger than a Yugo in their lifetime getting in a 40K# plus piece of equipment running lights and sirens.

And the state mandated training is a joke. Parallel park an engine\tanker\truck; back up to a cone as close as possible without hitting it without a spotter and yet most departments require spotters. Put everyone on a skid pad, give us some real training like the cops get, not this kind of crap.

Off my soapbox, Good afternoon all.
