I have never heard of a water cannon salute for a fallen soldier before. But it is done more offen for planes or pilots that are retiring. We did one here last year for a FedEx plane that was donated to our department. That the best that I can do. You guys did a great thing for that family.

Can anyone give the history of the "water cannon salute" given to fallen soldiers by ARFF trucks as they return home? We recently had a family friend, a marine, killed in Iraq and when he returned home, our ARFF trucks did the water cannon salute over his plane. The family asked me about the history of this tradition and I didn't have an answer. Can anyone help?

I work in the fighterwing of the Royal Danish Airforce as deputy on the fire department and as ARFF instructor.
Our AFB operates F-16 and some minor piston engined planes.
Our wing do have expeditionary status and we have participated in the air-war over former Yoguslavia and Afghanistan.
