You will find that I am hit & miss as far as this group or any other. Sometimes I have the time & energy to read & write & sometimes I'm away for long periods of time. Sorry. I am a safety officer as well and I can tell you from experience that your guys won't care that you exist unless they need you to be there. Sometimes they will expect you to be the one passing out the cool aid & making sure they have their gloves on. Other times they will want to discuss things with you (usualy when the chief didn't give them the right answer) pertaining to all kinds of stuff like where equipment is to if they need new gear because they got something on it (most of the time it just needs cleaned). You will find a lot of different ideas on what a safety officer is from your crew as well as this group I am sure.

Success. I don't know if my constant reminders or having embarassed a couple of guys made the difference, but we no longer have a problem with seat belts not being used. I think it may have more to do with our Chief not letting guys drive who have been caught not wearing their belts.

Hello Folks,

I am a relatively new safety officer (with 12 years experience) on my department and I believe the others members do not care if I exist unless they are doing something wrong and I talk to them about it? I am hoping to get some encite and suggestions by joining this Group?

Ed: We have a Department policy on seatbelt usage but that does not seem to matter to them? What is the deal?

To my surprise, our firefighters seem to be glad to have a Safety Officer and are paying closer attention to what they do and how they do it. I expected to be unpopular, expecially with those who don't like wearing their seat belts, but, so what? I get my "warm fuzzies" when everyone gets back safely. Is anyone else having trouble with seat belt use, and what are you doing to get everyone to buckle up?

My main goal as a safety officer is makeing sure everyone goes home and no one is ever left behind and keeping everyone safe at all times no matter what. No building is worth anyones life that's why we pay insurance the building can be replaced you can't.

the safety officer isn't the most popular person on the department
