I'm not sure if they still give these out... But when I certified as a LA County Paramedic, this pin was handed out during paramedic school graduation and worn on our uniform shirts. If you look closely at the EMERGENCY! series, you will see Gage and DeSoto with this pin on their uniform.

Being one of the old guys now... Like a lot of you, I was also influenced by the television show emergency. I was a Los Angeles County Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic back in the 70's. Having the paramedic credentials helped me get hired by the fire department. What I remember about the show was meeting both Kevin Tighe and Randy Mantooth at a party. Randy was sharing that he had come across an accident on the highway, rushed out of his car to the victims and just before saying, "hello mam, I'm a paramedic with the fire department here to help you...", it dawned on him that he was an actor, who pretends to be a firefighter paramedic. Reality check... This show was a springboard for a lot of us who eventually realized their dreams. Of course now, speaking for myself, it's really kind of cool looking back at these old television episodes and noticing the old gray fire captain who has to run herd over the younger paramedics... that's me now... kinda cool, don't you think?
