This is a simple awareness post that in my opinion, can be very useful for half the countries fire departments at a minimum... Only 43 out of 50 states have the option to purchase specialized fire department vehicle license plates for their personal vehicles. In many cases, money spent for these special license plates are earmarked for specific charities or things designed to help out fallen firefighters families. For those 7 states that do not have a vanity plate for firefighters, I ask why not? Again, this is another way to get both recognition in a quiet / non-emergency lights and whacker looking vehicles kind of a way. And you might be able to help someone out. Just a thought...

Another option that to be frank, surprised me was the lack of dedicated license plates identifying volunteer firefighters. Only New Mexico appears to have a license plate that is for volunteer firefighters. Considering that the majority of firefighters are volunteer department related, seems to me that this would be appropriate, but that's just my opinion. Chances are, you might not have even thought about it until now... And, maybe folks might not want to be differentiated from volunteer verses full time paid, not that it really matters. What's your opinion?

Bonus Question: Which states do not have firefighter license plates?

TCSS,

  9. Georgia
  10. Hawaii
  11. Idaho

There is of course a chance that my research was not exactly thorough. I admit it right up front, but this is as good as I can do without additional input from others. Please let me know if your state is already providing the option for firefighters to purchase firefighter vanity plates.

Arkansas has multiple firefighter license plates. Just off the top of my head they've got Firefighter, Retired Firefighter, Professional Firefighter, Firefighter Memorial. Many could also qualify for the EMS or Search and Rescue license plates also.
this post has been updated to reflect your input. thank you.
Massachusetts has firefighter plates also
so noted, and thanks for the input!

Helping you out CBz. The first one you need to be IAFF member. Others including Volunteers can get the second one if they meet FF certification requirements.
South Carolina has FF plates as well

A portion of the fees collected for this plate (based on the total number sold) goes to the South Carolina Fire Academy. You must certify that you are an active or retired member of a fire department on the application (Chief Officer of the Fire Unit must sign the application).

We used to have, and may still have although I can't find anything on the SCDMV site, a Volunteer Firefighter tag.

SC also has EMS and EMT tags

The plate for Massachusetts posted by the OP is wrong. That is the plate for municipal FD vehicles only.
I believe Texas also has EMS plates with the star of life on them.
I thought you were BZY not Frank. Ah! Oregon has these plates as well. Not to be Frank!
Capt. you left out Louisiana, we have plates for both Volunteer and Career firefighters. The Vollie says volunteer on it, yet the career says professional firefighter. I don't agree with that, since even vollies can be professional. With the right training, certification, and SOPs anyone can be profesional. Just my 2 cents though.
I have a plate both for my motorcycle and my truck.
Here's a link for a site that has the majority of fire plates listed with pictures

Good Morning all,
Just a note that Kansas also has a Firefighters plate. It can be viewed at the Kansas State Firefighters web site under the info section. If I were more computer savvy I would post it for you but as I am one of the "older" firefighters my computer skills are not that of todays probies. "LOL"
