I have a question. I heard that according to the new NFPA standard on gear says that eye protection no longer has to be on helmets.

Is this true? Can anyone shed some light on this subjest?

To me it makes sence to keep your safety glasses or goggles in your pockets. If they are on your helmet they can get melted, smoked up, scratched during fire ground operations. I guess that is good for the guys that make goggles but bad for us if we have to replace them every couple of months.

We have shields on our helmets, and these are NOT safety rated. I have had goggles when I worked out west, and these were for keeping the smoke out of my eyes (Wildland fires). I carry a ANSI safey glasses for medicals and auto crashes ect in my turnouts.
If a helmet is not ordered with NFPA compliant eye protection it will not have an NFPA sticker in it.
It does not matter what they say or not. If they do not ship with the helmet, the helmet will not have the correct labeling. I truly understand the intent of the standard. But, if you order a helmet without the goggles, faceshield of defender, it is not going to have the labeling on it.
Ummmm... I ceratinly have not heard that NFPA no longer requires some form of eye protection on a helmet. I know that NFPA does not qualify 4" face shields or bourke shields as compliant. As far as I know, 6" faceshields, defender shields, and goggles are compliant; and I may be wrong about the 6" face shields.

Anyway... My dept issues helmets with 4" face shields, something I found to be very awkward and making the helmet uncomfortable to wear. I ripped the faceshield off and put on a set of ESS extricator goggles. They are great for brush fires (keeping the dust out of your eyes) and they work well for MVA's too. Supposedly you can shoot the lens with a .22 and they wont break. I havn't tested that lol
My department orders the 4" shields for our helmets. I do carry additional safety glasses in my gear. I also have heard nothing about NFPA issuing new standards.
Actually, this isn't 100% in effect any more. The snap-on ESS goggles are NFPA compliant, and they work better than the attached ones because they don't get heat damaged, smoked up, or scratched into oblivion. My department issues the snap-on ESS for anyone who wants a 660, although we have the Defenders on the 1010's. Several of us also have leather helmets with the new NFPA-compliant Bourkes.
They did have a "law" you had to its what lead to Bourkes being taken off .however as i understand it now you can wear bourkes "flipups" as long as you can provide proof of safety glasses impact resisitant..as i do
You do not need to have the goggles physically on your helmet at all times. If the helmet is ordered without eye protection, the helmet will not be labeled as NFPA compliant. It will only be labeled as OSHA compliant. I am a helmet dealer.
NFPA just barks. OSHA has the teeth and bites.
Where can i find this statement online?
That is 100% correct, however what I keep repeating has to do with how the helmet is ordered and shippied. Once you get the helmet, you can pretty much do whatever you want as far as your eye protection goes. That being said, you should still try to be compliant, or better. They are your eyes that you are protecting.
