Have you ever gone to the National Fire Academy for training? Do you realize how much training an opportunity is there an its pretty easy to go there and take advantage of the training being offered. Whether its the Volunteer Incentive Program- 1 week classes or the two week classes primarily for paid firefighters there is so much to be had there you just have to apply. The only cost to you or your agency is the cost of your food while your there and your spending money. Of course you have to pay for your transportation to get here. However, your agency will be reimbursed for that expense. I have been there twice and have seriously been enriched by the training and experience as well as the friendships Ive made with other firefighters there. The National Fire Academy is there for us. Take advantage of it. Here is a link to take a look at whats there an what it has to offer you- www.usfa.dhs.gov/nfa/
Ask your Chief or training officer about it.

Chief,  don't forget about the online portion of NFA. The "coffee break" series isgood for five minutes after roll call.
Chief, your so right. There is much to be offered. Check it out.
The National Fire Academy is amazing. And another thing if you cant make the one or two week sessions every year the NFA holds state weekends where your state is invited to the NFA for a weekend of training classes.

I have been to the academy twice now. Once for an explorer weekend years ago and then my senior year of college our fire science program at Anna Maria in MA, was invited to join the Indiana State Weekend at the NFA.

You definately get to learn about other departments, and how things are done around the country along with the training classes.
I was fortunate to be able to go with an entourage from the Alabama Fire College for for their "State Weekend" program last year (we shared the campus with FF's from the States of New Hampshire, and Vermont). I took the 2 day Incident Safety Officer class and thoroughly enjoyed it, great class material & group discussions. It was also real interesting to hear how other folks do things, you can take home a lot of great ideas.

They have a pretty sweet setup, beautiful campus and facilities. I would love to go back and take one of their 2 week classes..
During my career, I had the opportunity to attend the National Fire Academy for a total of one-month of training broken up into two, 2-week courses focusing on hazardous materials response. It was an outstanding learning experience and what made it even better was the other students, who came from all over the country. That's how you learn and bring new things back to your department.
I have been there twice for the ohio weekend. It is a great opportunity and a great time! The classes and the instructors are top of the line, and lets not forget the OTT HOUSE!
I have been to Emmitsburg a few times and each time the education that I have received is second to none. From the formal education with the instructor(s) and class room time to the informal, talking with other fire fighters from around the state and around the country. I strongly encourage anyone who has the chance to go to embrace the opportunity.

Stay Safe
I don't think so, nor do I think it is appropriate to provide funding for anyone that is a firefighter, not a JR/EXP. Nothing personal Tim, but the level of training that you need to focus on can be provided, and by design is intended to be available to you at the local "engine company" level.

Admittance into the NFA is even limited to full time paid professionals. You can apply but there is only so many spaces available. To think or even suggest that course funding for anyone other than paid or volunteer firefighters is just silly, and very naive...

CBz
you will find my departments patches somewhere on the wall with the thousands of others Jack...
Tim,

All of the online courses can be taken by anyone as long as they are part of a department.
I have been to a couple of Indiana State weekend and last year went to a 1-week VIP class. I hope to go again sometime. All of the training has been the best I have ever received in the fire service. Even better than the training may be the discussions with other firefighters from across the county.
Agreed. It would be a waste of money for an explorer to go. Stay home and study for school so that when you graduate you can land a full-time firefighting job if that's what you want. AFTER you get your job you can start looking at advanced training.
