I come from a small town in wv. There is ten dept. in the county but one stands out among the rest. This dept refuses to use mutal aid with its neighboring company. The reason the chief won't use mutial aid is because he don't like members under 18 and my dept. has more acctive members. So your thoughts would be appriciated.

I would agree with the chief then, because I wouldn't use members under 18 either.
Besides there is nothing stating anywhere that a dept has to utilize mutual aid, a dept can also design the cards how they want and if a dept refuses to utilize a dept that uses children, then so be it. In fact, IMO, there should more chiefs like this one who will refuse to use children on fire scenes.
"... he don't like members under 18 and my dept. has more acctive members...

The fire may not know the difference but that Chief sure does. Good for him.
John I sort of agree with you,BUT it is the Chiefs call on using mutual aid or not and its not our place to question his decision
That is friggin hilarious Jack!!!

Not sure what you're getting at Paul, because that is what I mentioned anyway. It IS the chief's call to utilize MA and if the chief doesn't want to utilize a dept which utilizes children then that is his right.....and I agree with the decision to also not utilize a dept which utilizes children.

So, I am NOT questioning the chief's decision at all, in fact I'm applauding his decision not to use a dept which utilzes children.
People can choose not to use MA for all kinds of reasons. It might not be the age so much as the equipment or training but I'm guessing if it hits the fan he would call everyone.

And I have to ask. If they have the training why wouldn't you use people no matter what their age is?
If that's a chief's decision and has a legitimate reason then yes its acceptable. But if you to work on something to provide mutual aid then make all 18 under not respond to that town for calls... MY department does that I'm only allowed to respond to calls in-town and that's it...
Under 18 here in Indiana you can't take any of the state test. No certifcation you can't be on the fire ground.
the way it should be. Congrats.

Because of Federal Child Labor laws. Minor's are not allowed to work in certain dangerous occupations.

I applaud the Chief.
See this is why here in TX at my department we have Jr ff and they learn about firefighting before they get to move to the actual department. When they choose to be a ff they also have to be 18 to join.
The Washington DC Metropolitan area has set up the biggest mutial aid system. Virginia, Maryland, DC and Federal depts have adopted a numbering system that IDs units from a county or jurisdiction they respond from.
They have or working to replace most of the radio systems with a trunking system that allows all jurisdictions to communicate with each other on fire or emergency incidents.
There is a number of career, combination or volunteer depts in the area so career and volunteer crews are dispatched and can be sent across county or state lines to calls or fill ins.
If any volunteer member is 16 to 18 of age is riding a unit they will wear a color helmet that IDs them as non operational and they assigned to stay out of the way assiting non emergency operations on a incident like getting personnel tags off apparatus to take to the command post.
