Our dept is about to have its 60th anniversary banquet and  there is a disgussion about having it at a major hotel with a banquet room or to go to a near by fire company's hall. Now if we go with the hotel there will be rooms for those that get a little tipsy to have a place to crash than go out on the highway and crash plus rooms for those that will be be coming from out of town to be part of the anniversary. Which would be a better idea?

Now another thing is that the dept was formed a year before the building was finished and the first pumper was placed in it. Now which is the important date for a anniversary? The forming of the dept or the dated the station opened to serve the community?

First question: pick the hotel
Second : Both are important
We had our 100th anniversary in 1997. We used the local Army's building for the party. Had a weekend of firefighter follies. Wrote a book of our history. It was a huge undertaking and we actually got help from almost everyone on the department. Every piece of your department history is important. Get pictures, lots of pictures and make a powerpoint that can just run in a loop on a screen for all to see. The more old timers that you can find the better, the stories will make the event much more enjoyable. They did some really funny (pronounced scary) shit back in the day. Have fun with it!
We will be 150 years old this next December, we do have a huge party every year on our anniversary, but this year it would be much more !!!
What we are running into is who is running the operation for the banquet and spending the money. Money is there for what can be done but you have people that want to use some of it for something else or just figures that we are going to use money for a event that will be a bust or just don't want to deal with it.
Someone was put in charge but then it was taken over by someone else with no questions asked. We have set a date for this event but we don't have much time and have not set the location. No invitations have been sent to find out who would attend so we would know how big a place to have.
There has been talk of postponing until after 2010 and into the middle of 2011 but we have people that disagree to that.
We have people just being hard headed and in dispute with each other.
One idea I had was if we went with the other fire dept's hall was to have rooms at a nearby hotel with chauffeur service to and from for those from out of town and those not able to drive so that they can crash in a room for the night than on the road. The other was if someone wanted to spend sometime with someone special for the night.
