For Volunteers, Do your engineers work on the apparatus?
When I started 30 years ago our engineers did minor maintenance on our engines. Now the guy we have favorite words are, "get it towed to the dealer" I understand things have changed since then but are there engineers that still change the oil and stuff?

We used to have a retired guy that would check the fluids and such but now we have ours done by a Apparatus service and repair business. Cant afford to have someone not licensed and certified to work on your apparatus.

We do the smaller stuff (oil and bulbs, etc) anything requiring more than a wrench set and phillips goes to the shop.

Hey there. On our department we elect an apparatus officer every year, and it's their responsibility to take care of the trucks, either on their own or by outsourcing. I just happen to be the apparatus officer , and have been for several years. The way I work it is I do what i can with my skills (I'm a certified mechanic) and the equipment we have at the hall. The next step, if I can't make the time for repairs, or it's out of the scope of the halls facilities (such as Government Inspections etc...) I send them out to a local shop with the resources to work on them. The next step is stuff that shop isn't capable of, such as pump work and generally "Fire Truck" specific things, I call in a mobile EVT from the "Big City". This way my trucks NEVER leave our fire district. I should mention that we're a volunteer/paid on call station, so I dont always have the time to spend on the trucks. By the way, I'm working on getting EVT certified. Just the way we do it. Stay safe! -Spencer

We handle all the little stuff ourselves(light bulbs, fluid topoffs, minor wiring and pump work), but leave the major repairs to the County Vehicle Maint. crew.

No, our department consists of about 85% àre truck drivers for a job. So they are pretty well off when it comes to maintenance. And our chief works as a diesel tech at ALLISON TRANSMISSION inc. So you could say we're pretty well off.

We do basic maintenance. We change all the oil in our rigs

how about chiefs i change oil, fix flats, have changed hundreds of batteries over the years , replace repair tighten packins, repair burned out lights , repair or replace sirens , add new holders and equip. all the time and for the last 18 years . ok, i drive to so guess im an engineer too

Believe me its NOT a good idea to do this, because when they start requesting maintainence records unless you want your dept picked to death try to not do this.

We have an engineer who is a diesel mechanic at the local John Deere dealership, and he sometimes does some maintenance. A good portion of our maintenance and repairs is done by a retired former volunteer.

Well, I am the Asst. Engineer at our department. I have done everything from check the air in the tires to a full transmission rebuild and everything in between

Our department is volunteer but we do have a full time mechanic. Many of the firefighters are willing to jump in and help where they can with minor issues under his direction. He does all of the major work or repairs
