Doomed to Destruction?
Spotted a hydrant behind a commercial strip today, but then noticed something else. Would you position your apparatus behind this structure during a working fire? The retaining wall on the right becomes taller as it bends out of site, finally topping out at 20 feet in height. It extends to the other end of the block.

Probably not! Just depends on whats happening as to whether Ide position a truck back there.

probably not....Have to allow a collapse zone of 3 times the height regardless of the wall.........so not much room there....depends on where the fire is.....we do what we have to do.....

That's called the Chief's Friend. It's only purpose is to get you in trouble during hydrant flushing when you miss it.

This looks like a good place to back the engine in and reverse lay from a portable monitor if the structure is well involved.
Then again, in my world, there is a FDC within 100 feet of the hydrant, and in that case, we'd hook up to that hydrant any time.

Some posters have missed the point that the question was "Would you position your apparatus behind this structure during a working fire?". Unless of course the original post has been altered?
From what we can see, I don't think I'd be wanting to put a pumper up there. Though a print from Google Maps would help us to understand the layout a bit better.
Without that overhead view, I'd be doubtful about sending crews with hoses up there either, yes we talk about 1.5 times the building height too, but we prefer 2 to 3 times in practice! The thought of walls etc. falling towards our people is not something we like.

the plug looks far enuff away that your gonna have to put out some hose either way, i just wouldnt be staged in the rear of this structure, and theres probly a few more in that lot we dont see, like on the opposite side or parking lot. back to the point, no i wouldnt stage there

Possibly. Couple things run through my mind. If this is a "newer" strip center there is probably a good chance it is sprinklered and has seperation walls (possibly even a fire wall given the change in height of the structure) so that helps some. I believe putting an apparatus back here could be a viable possibility. The fuel load and location of the fire will dictate the possibility of putting an apparatus back here. I would have the apparatus back into this area.
