Boots

I was just accepted into the Fire Academy for the Baton Rouge Fire Dept. I start the academy in early Feb. I need to have boots for when I start. Can anyone recommend a good boot? Price range doesnt matter since I will be living in them the next 24 weeks. Comfort, durability...everything matters. Also, does the sizing differ from tennis shoes? Thanks in advance.

Too late now, but I would have suggested that you join an Aussie Fire Service - all equipment issued to you when arriving . I still find it hard to believe that you have to buy your own gear over there!

Here Here Tony but the missus just joined and the RO will not issue her stuff until she has minimum skills
which is march april when the next course come up.

I take a 10 in shoes and a 10 in boots..
Save your money till you make it then make it a gift to yourself for a new pair..

thorogood leather boots- thefirestore.com i wear a size 14 work boot and a size 14 fire boot- sorry don't wear tennis shoes too often.

Pretty much any of the name brand boots, Rocky Red wing, Thorogood, any of them would work just have to try them and find which one works for you

Hey Pike, I'm Lake Charles, good luck at LSU FETI. I wear a 10 1/2- 12 shoe depending on the brand. If you're talking station/duty boots go with your comfortable tennis shoe size, if you're talking turnout boots (rubber or leather) I suggest getting something fitted for something that fits real snug, and then going with a 1/2 size larger. Check out Galls.com , they have charts for measuring for all clothes/gear/boots/etc. Keep me updated on your progress if you don't mind, I'd like to know how the academy is.

Personally i like Bates. They are comfortable,durable,long lasting with lots of ankle support. however if you are talking fire boots. i STRONGLY reccomend Warrington Pro.

Same with us. We lend recruits everything except footware until they've got minimum skills, then Region will issue the lot. It was the career guys I was really talking about.

Globe makes an AWESOME leather turnout boot. When I first got on my dept. I was issued a pair of rubber boots that worked fine and that I was pretty happy with. That was until I was issued these new globes and wow!!! I will never wear a rubber boot again. Those leather globes feel like you are wearing a pair of comfortable tennis shoes while working and they look great too. I've had them for a little over a year now and so far they have held up great.

For a turnout boot you can not beat the globe boots, they are light they are comfortable, and they last. As for a duty boot I would echo what is being said get something that fits your foot. We all have different feet. I can not wear Thorogood boots and have destroyed a few pair of hi-techs I love my current rockys. Try them on is the best suggestion I can make.

Are they rated as firefighting boots though? Temperature and chemical resistant?

Our Army boots are great to wear, very comfortable , and they have a steel shank. But they don't have the steel toe-cap, the 300 degree Celsius temp rating or chemical restistance rating of my issued firefighting boots. Which also are extremely comfortable to wear!

Most of the leather boots go right along with your street shoe size...I have Thoroughgood's...they are light and easy on the feet....the Globe magnums are nice but a little pricey....The rubber boots are good but are heavy than hell...esp after about 4 hours in them.....Good luck.....Have fun...remember...Keep your mouth shut and your ears open.......Paul
