When a firefighter dies in the line of duty I know there is particular things that a Dept. is suposed to do if it is a fire dept. funeral but what if one of our brothers die not in the line of duty? What about those who were retired or even those who are no longer active with the dept.? Let's hear your opinions of what should or shouldn't happen; you know like the ladders crossed or a broken axe, etc.

We mainly ask the spouse or family what they'd like to have, some want it all and some don't want much. We'll do the casket guard shift, with all the trucks present to just showing up to the funeral in our uniforms.
Check Tiger Schmittendorf's blog on fire department funeral practices. It will give you some excellent info.
Here is the guide from the National Fallen Firefighter Memorial. It address all of your questions.

One of our members that had been retired for several years passed. We gave him a full firefighters funeral all the depts from the county came with their trucks. Its what his family wanted and what he would have wanted.
Hey Oldman nice to see your out walking again with out the cane:)
I'm having it refitted with new woo woo lights and a siren!
i think the nices thing that ive seen and heard of is doing a ff funeral but just before you load them onto the truck the dispatch sets off county tones and your tones and says that you our informing that ff john does last call and they say like a little nice thing about them like how greatly they will be missed it was really nice!
BUT IT REALLY IS UP TO THE FAMILY IF THEY OUR RETIRED/VOLUNTEER
IF THEY OUR PAID THEY DESERVE A FULL FF FUNERAL

THATS JUST MY OPINION
I love the idea of having the county dispatch toning them out one last time. What honor.
