The top priority of most Fire Service Organizations is the satisfaction of the public and professional image. Let me ask you today, how does one attain that? The public expects us to run into that burning building, the public expects us to render aid to that person, they expect us to help them in any…

That is a topic that often brings out the most heated of discussions, but there is a division nationwide between volunteers and career firefighters.
I recently had a conversation with a…

Every organization serves customers. Retail stores, governments, hospitals and restaurants they all serve customers, both internally and externally. So, shouldn’t meeting the needs of all of their customers be a top priority? Trickle-down service may be the most effective way to serve everyone.
Fire departments, like other organizations, are trying to make their way…

Excerpts from pipenozzle.com post on 9/11 in historical context:
9/11 will become a monument. But 9/11 has already become yet another powerful metaphor for the infinite stupidity of human beings, the infinite willingness to destroy. And 9/11 has become yet another metaphor of the infinite capacity of human beings to resist the worst…

Fresh out of the oven, some humble pie. Served with the right amount of self-critique, this can be a tasty dish.

When More Isn’t Better: During instruction, comprehension tops volume By Kurt GlosserThink back to your last fire-related class. Was it filled with tons of information, lots of content? How many pages were in the student manual? How many slides flashed before your glazed eyes?
How have so many instructors come to believe that they must tell students everything they know about a particular…

More for Their MoneyIf we expect a pay raise, we have to do more than just show up when called By Scott CookI’ll be the first to say that fire and EMS personnel generally aren’t paid nearly enough. I’ll also be the first to say that we knew what the job paid when we took it—practically begged…

When you say we'll protect you and serve you, where do you draw the line? Does there have to be a fire? A medical emergency? Or just a genuine need for help when you have run out of places to go or people to turn to?

Let me start with something basic, expectation; even more basic, financial expectations. It is said that of all divorces about 90% of them are due to some type of financial reason. I would tend to agree with this, but what is that fiscal reasoning. I believe that it may be the lack of communication of fiscal expectation.…

I have been contemplating for a few weeks about starting a regular blog on this site. I thought that it would be relatively easy to do, just start typing about something and make it interesting. Ok, not has easy as I thought it could be. I have to give a lot of “props” to the likes of Art and other fire service bloggers. You guys are constantly coming out with relevant topics to…

Now that the new decade has started and having had time to reflect on what I have and have not achieved over the last 10 years it is time to set some goals.
1. Family always comes first;
2. Lose those excess kilograms;
3. Get fit;
4. Remain active and involved not just in firefighting but in my community as well;
5. Keep learning;
6. Continue to promote firefighting as a career choice not just for those who want to do this as paid work but for those people…

I’ve read and watched this news clip from the NY Daily Dispatch about how training requirements in New York State are hurting the volunteer fire service:

Unfortunately, I think it follows a growing pattern of articles and news pieces that focus on the problems – and not…

It’s Veterans Day and I have a day off from my county job. (I thank Veterans for both of those freedoms: to work in a job I love and to have time off to spend with my family). The kids are still sleeping and I have some free time to sit at the computer.
I’ve been thinking of my Dad a lot lately. Maybe because a friend recently lost hers; maybe because I spent the last week with a few thousand National Guardsmen; or maybe because recent events in our lives have reinforced the…

As I travel around the country talking with other firefighters, a commonly recurring theme of our chat is the future of the volunteer fire service.
The conversation always comes around to the topic of today’s firefighters and the next generation of firefighters. Some “more experienced” firefighters (notice I didn’t use the term older) share that they don’t understand the “kids” coming into the fire service today.
The veterans don’t think today’s recruits share the same…

On Friday, members of the Barbados Fire Service learned of the death of Chrisita Idalia Yarde a civilian employee of the department.
Ms. Yarde was employed as a maid and worked with the department for many years serving at all of the fire stations before being appointed to staff (full time) in 2004. She was last assigned to the Worthing Fire Station in Christ Church.
The sincerity with which Idalia approached everyone will certainly be…
