New to EMS
Ok time for a new Blog,
I have noticed while doing this Job the amount of Brand New EMT-B, that have just got there ticket and head directly into a Paramedic school,I am not bashing any of you for this I think you have the right path in mind. I do have to say this though,take a breath before you leap, it is alot to handle when you become a Basic, let it get into your blood, make sure you have the confidence that you can walk into a room with a person that has a medical condition,and you feel confident that you can Identify that this person really isn't feeling well...or you can walk in and say yep this is a BS call..........give yourself at least that yr or two of standing back and watching another medic who has been in the field for at least 5 or more yrs. They can teach yo alot.
I have been a Basic now for 5 yrs, and I am PA certified and let me tell you I love each and every Paramedic I work with and I respect them for everything they do..I love my Job and I am now ready to take the next step but it is not straight to Paramedic, it is time to move to the Intermediate level, and to do that for a yr or two until I get the comfort of knowing that I can perform my Basic duty and then my Intermediate skills...Well like I said in the beginning, don't rush it sometimes we loose our selfs in becoming as high up on the line,, that we forget that most of it is in Basic skills.. if you have that feeling of discomfort about that call just think how you are going to feel reading that EKG strip,tubing,medications,IV fluids. Take your time and let the knowledge sink in........................
To all the Paramedics in this field, Thank You all...I am so proud to have the chance to work and learn from each and everyone of you.......the story's,the friendships,and the knowledge you all bring with you when you come in for your shift is so amazing.

Our dept. has a manditory 1 year time from EMT-B to EMT-I or higher. I am glad that they do. I would rather have some one freak out over something sorta minor than when everything hits the fan. I need to be able to trust them and their skills and not have me concerned about them too. I thank God for the good medics and pray to God that the bad ones improve.

I've been in EMS for about seventeen years and my best advise to anyone who is even thinking about paramedic, take your time learn from a good medic with experience and remember that we are all here for one thing, To Help Our Fellow Man/Woman In Their Time Of Need,

I totally agree that people should wait at least a year before going to the next level. We have a couple EMT programs that have people going into the Intermediate program, even before they get their results from the national registry.. We actually have nicknamed it the "Zero to Hero" program... New EMT's should have that year to adjust into the field and make sure they can do the job as a basic before moving on. I have been in EMS since 1997. Just because someone is book smart doesn't mean they are street smart, or can function out in the field. Take your time and continute to learn before you take that next big leap...

I love it, "Zero to Hero"!! I'm not positive what the mandatory wait time is between Basic and Paramedic on my dept., but I know it is at least a year. Possibly 2 years. We really haven't run into the problem of people wanting to advance that far, that fast at my volunteer dept. I knew I wanted to go to Paramedic School by the time I graduated with my basic school. But I also knew there was no WAY I wanted to go right into it, either. I was a Basic on my volunteer dept and got a job working for a Private Ambulance Company as well... I was a Basic for a year and 9 months before I started Paramedic school. It was a nice pace, training, etc. I felt like I was comfortable enough with my skills to tackle something new. We had a good blend of people in my medic class, too-- those who were fairly fresh out of Basic school (about a year, or right under), and those who had been Basics for about 5-7 years. Anyway. I got a little off subject. (sorry!) I agree that there needs to be time in between schooling levels. I'd rather have someone who is street smart, rather than book smart working beside me. Just my 2 cents.

I agree i watch others and learn from them.. i have the confidence i live for this i trive for this im only 17 years old but EMS is my calling i wouldnt b half as helpful as i am today if were not for growing up around nothing but EMS both volonteer and paid.. i plan to go for my paramedic in the next year or two

AMEN AMEN just in case you didnt hear that AMEN I could not agree more, I have been an emt for 8 years with mulitiple modules (equivalant to a 85 I) and am just now looking at medic school. I feel a person with field experience as a basic is a much better paramedic.

I once complained that as a basic EMT, I felt like I couldn't do anything for a patient. A wise paramedic once told me this, "Remember, a paramedic is nothing but a basic EMT, unless they are working under the license of a medical director." This really put things in good perspective for me. Unless I am at work at my job, if I come across a medical situation, I'm just a basic EMT. So, my basic skills are foremost in my training.
