Live fire testing begins in the research of attic fires.

What do you hope to learn from this latest fire behavior research?

Time...How short is the time before these attics and roof support systems collapse.  I hope they are using some of the glued only trusses in these experiments.  The other thing is I would like to see the effect of the gable end being opened up and water applied directly into the attic space.

How effective is opening a hole in the ceiling and hitting the fire with a fog stream prior to any type of ventilation (smothering the fire) and if so how long does the fire burn before this becomes ineffective. Also Interested in knowing how the gable end attack works with or without spreading the fire.

The replies by Don Catenacci and Neil Myers are excellent. I would be confident that UL would have incorporated all the scenarios imaginable to provide the fire service comprehensive results. Their previous research has educated us all. Some interpret their message and information as a change in tactics, for some that is the case for others it just a change in attitude and how we approach fires safely.

It would seem to follow logically that if the recent research shows that hose streams can't push fire that applying a stream into the gable end shouldn't push the fire anywhere.

I would hope that they test multiple roof and attic construction types. The hip roof and attic are more common in my area than are the gable style, especially in new construction on smaller lots. I know a couple of departments that have used short piercing nozzles through the roof decking for rapid knockdown, instead of accessing the ceiling first.
